In soccer, teams can be out shot, out played, and out possessed.
But only one thing matters. Who gets outscored.
The Blue Streaks learned that the hard way Sunday night at Don Shula Stadium.
John Carroll and Penn State Behrend faced-off in a second round match-up in the NCAA Division III Championship that was not decided until the 103rd minute. That was when the Lions found the back of the net -- Dakota Lange pouncing on a loose ball in the box and pushing his squad to the round of 16 with a 1-0 victory.
Â
Through the first 75 minutes of play, to say the Blue Streaks had an ample amount of scoring chances would be an understatement. The Blue and Gold controlled the ball well on the offensive end, making it a one-sided ball game for the majority of the second half.
Â
The stats support that story. In the second half, JCU held the advantage with 11 shots (including four on goal). The Lions added four shots themselves, none coming on net. Regulation time would not be enough for these two teams, as the match was set to go to overtime.
Â
In the first overtime, John Carroll continued to maintain control of the ball. The Blue and Gold put three shots on net compared to zero on the end of Penn State Behrend. There was no score just yet, so to another overtime these two teams went.
Â
The first shot of the second overtime was the only shot - the game winner.
Â
For the match, the Blue Streaks outshot the Lions, 19-9. PSB senior goalkeeper Chris Ralph compiled six saves in his shutout victory. JCU senior
Liam McIntosh saved two himself.
Â
Freshman
Mikey Burrington strung six shots on net, none of which found the back of the goal.
Â
Next for the victors, Penn State Behrend will play the Knights of Calvin College in the third round of the NCAA Tournament at a site, date and time to be determined.
Â
As for the Blue Streaks, a stellar season comes to an end with a record of 14-5-2.
