Men's Basketball Closes Out 2018 on High Note with Win Over Frostburg State

On the final day of the Roanoke Invitational, the John Carroll men's basketball team defeated the Bobcats of Frostburg State University (105-70) on Sunday afternoon.

This is the first time this season that the Blue Streaks recorded over 100 points. The win margin (35) also marks a new season high.

"It's a quality win from the standpoint that it shows our young ball club that if we are consistent with our effort and energy, we are a solid team," said head coach Pete Moran. "We know as a team our best basketball is still in front of us."

Establishing an early lead would prove to be crucial for the Blue Streaks. After opening the game with a 5-0 run, the Blue and Gold held on to their lead for the remainder of the half.

Despite the momentum being in the hands of the Blue Streaks, Frostburg made an effort to chip away at the JCU lead. With 11 minutes to go before halftime, the Bobcats managed to come within one point of the Blue Streaks on three separate occasions.

As the half came to a close, John Carroll managed to take their largest lead of the half (13). With 6:54 remaining, Luke Hippler would make a layup and spark a 22-10 run to make the score 48-35 at the game's intermission. Sean Flannery and Jimmy Berger chipped in six points apiece during the run, with Hippler following with five. Connor Fitzgerald and Jackson Sartain combined for five.

The Blue Streaks continued their momentum and didn't look back in the second half, outscoring the Bobcats 57-35. Berger and Sartain each recorded 14 of the JCU points, with Berger shooting a perfect 7-7 from the field. Sartain also went 4-6 (.667) from beyond the arc. Their points along with help from Fitzgerald, Antonio Garofoli, Ben Merril, Emmett Chambers, Patrick Daugherty, and Shaun Csire gave the Blue Streaks the points they needed to maintain their sizable lead and take home the win.

Three Blue Streaks finished in the double figures in points. Berger led the way with 30 points, matching his career best, while Fitzgerald and Sartain followed with 21 and 16. Sartain also totaled a career-best in rebounds (10) en route to his first career double-double.

On defense, Berger and Flannery tied for the team high in steals (3). Berger also tallied one block in addition to a pair coming from Emil Hess.

For his exceptional performance over the weekend, Berger was named to the all-classic team. He finished the weekend with 37 points, eight assists, seven rebounds, and three steals.

With the win, the Blue and Gold now stand at 6-6 (2-3 OAC) on the season.

John Carroll will next travel to Wilmington to face the Fightin' Quakers on Saturday, January 5. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
