Pieces Still Puzzling As John Carroll Struggles On a Long Night In Alliance

There are a lot of new pieces and a few pieces still missing for the John Carroll men's basketball team.

That was quite evident in Wednesday night's loss against the host Mount Union Purple Raiders. The Blue Streaks could not find an offensive rhythm and had few answers on defense in falling by a final score of 95-74, resulting in their second loss in the OAC (0-2).

After a 3-0 start, John Carroll is now 3-3 on the season. This is only the second three-game losing streak for JCU over the last six seasons.

In the first half, the Purple Raiders ran off to an early 31-17 lead and never looked back. John Carroll started to creep back into the game late in the first half when Jackson Sartain sank a three ball to start a 6-0 run.

The score was 36-29 with 7:02 remaining following a Sean Flannery three ball, but Mount Union closed out the half on a 14-7 run to take a 50-36 lead going into the half.

To start the second half, the Purple Raiders went on a 10-0 run that essentially cemented the outcome.

Sartain led the way for John Carroll, finishing with 21 points. Of his total, 18 of those points came behind the three point line on 6-11 shooting

Junior Jimmy Berger added 12 points and led the team in rebounds.

Mount Union, which improved to 7-1 and 3-0 in the OAC, was paced by a game-high 30 points from Tommy Stenger. The senior guard scored a career high by making 12-17 from the field, including 6-10 from three-point range.

John Carroll will look to bounce back at home against Muskingum University at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center on Saturday, December 8th for a 1:00 pm tip-off.
