Box Score John Carroll attempted to sweep Transylvania College on Sunday, but a plethora of stranded baserunners in the early innings came back to haunt the Blue Streaks in a 6-2 setback. The sixth and seventh innings would doom the Blue Streaks, as the host Pioneers turned a 1-1 tie into a 6-1 runaway.
Freddy Moore stepped out on the bump for JCU going 6 2/3 inning, allowing six runs, with three strikeouts.
Patrick Keohane paced the offense by going 2-4, scoring one of the two runs.
Moore came out of the gates on fire, retiring six of the first seven batters he faced. Transylvania had the opportunity of having a big third inning with their first two batters reaching base. However, John Carroll turned a 5-4-3 double play to slow down the Transylvania attack, allowing one run in the third.
The Blue and Gold stepped up in the sixth inning,
David Ferguson ripped a shot to centerfield earning his fifth double of the season.
Sam Heaton took over on the base path for Ferguson and scored shortly after.
Derek Penman came up to bat, making enough contact to let Heaton tag up from third base and score the first run of the game for JCU.Â
Trouble was, the sixth inning was yet another in which JCU left a host of runners on base. The Blue Streaks stranded ten runners in the first six innings, including two in the first, three in the second, two in the fifth and two in the sixth.
With the score tied 1-1, the Pioneers responded in the bottom half of the sixth scoring two runs off of Moore. Transylvania then added three runs of insurance in the seventh inning
In the ninth, John Carroll would get one run back when Keohane scored on a ground out. But the Blue Streaks left two on, bringing their total for the game to 13 left on base. It was JCU's second highest total of the season, bested only by 17 runners left on base in a 15-inning game vs. Allegheny on February 24.
