JCU Splits Final Road Doubleheader Against Marietta College

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Coming into the day John Carroll was still alive in the OAC tournament hunt, splitting with Marietta keeps those chances alive. Game one would go in favor of the Pioneers, while the Blue Streaks would bounce back in winning fashion. 

Game 1 - John Carroll 4, Marietta 10
 
Marietta began game one with a run in the bottom of the first inning, to grasp the initial 1-0 lead.The Pioneers carried their scoring efforts into the second inning with a three run inning to cling onto a 4-0 lead.
 
In the top of the third the Blue and Gold countered, scoring their first two runs of the afternoon. Freshman Michael Anderson reached base with two outs on a single past the second baseman. Junior Patrick Keohane then doubled to right center field to put two runners in scoring position. Sophomore Aaron Zawadzki singled up the middle to total two RBI to cut the deficit to two runs.
 
The Pioneers extended their lead to three runs in the fifth inning as senior Chris Petrucci hit a double into the gap in right center field to end starting pitcher Steve Virost's day.
 
Virost finished the afternoon pitching 3.1 innings, allowing five earned runs on five hits, five walks, and no strikeouts.
 
Freshman left hander Nick D'Angelo replaced Virost following the allowance of the fifth run.
 
The Blue Streaks countered the Pioneers one run inning in the fourth with a response of two runs in the top of the fifth. Zawadzki contributed the third run for this third RBI of the afternoon with a single, scoring Keohane, and freshman Mike McCarty no scored unearned.
 
Marietta led 5-4 following the fifth inning.
 
JCU picked up in the sixth inning offensively where they left off in the fifth, as Sophomore Joe Charpentier and junior Derek Penman added hits but they were left on base with no runs scored.
 
Marietta's sixth inning proved to be much more entertaining offensively, with the Pioneers flashing a five run inning, which lengthened the lead to 10-5.
 
D'Angelo's day was done after 2.1 innings with five hits, five earned runs, a walk, and two strikeouts.
 
Freshman Erich Payne replaced D'Angelo midway through the sixth inning to complete the pitching duties for the Blue and Gold.
 
JCU was held to two hits in the final three innings, as the Pioneers held onto their 10-4 lead.
 
Payne finished the day pitching 2.1 innings, allowing one hit and one walk, and striking out two batters.
 
The Blue Streaks and the Pioneers totaled 11 hits a piece in the contest but Marietta gathered ten runs compared to JCU's four to earn the win.
 
Zawadzki smacked three hits and toasted three RBI in the loss with Keohane accumulating two hits, scoring twice.
 
Junior Dominic Mittiga reached base three times, but was left on base at the conclusion of each inning.
 
Game 2 - John Carroll 4, Marietta 2
 
The second game of the doubleheader was highlighted by starting pitcher Freddy Moore. The sophomore threw six innings of work, allowing zero earned runs, with two hits allowed.
 
At the dish, four different would record an RBI.
 
Scoring started in the third inning, with Aaron Zawadzki nailing a single down the left field line, bringing Michael Anderson across home plate for the first run of the second game.
 
Joe Charpentier tacked on another run following Zawadzki. Charpentier put the ball deep enough scoring Patrick Keohane from third base. Moore, continued to deal for the next three innings, with the Blue Streaks sticks slowing down.
 
In the sixth inning. Matthew Donnelly hit a grounder to the second baseman, but Derek Penman using his speed dashed towards home plate, putting JCU up 3-0. Sam Heaton, roped a single to center field scoring David Ferguson and giving the Blue and Gold a 4-0 advantage.
 
The bottom half of the inning the Pioneers would score one run with it being unearned.
 
Moore would exit, bringing Cameron Mayle in to the game. The sophomore allowed one earned run in the seventh inning.
 
John Carroll added one insurance run in the ninth, pushing the Blue Streak to 5-2. Nathaniel Wenson shutdown the Pioneers for the final two innings action.
 
Next up, John Carroll will host Case Western Reserve, Tuesday May 1, first pitch is set for 4 p.m.
