A one hour and 40 minute thunderstorm delay could not keep these two teams from battling on the turf at Don Shula Stadium on a humid Wednesday night. After a brief second pregame warmup, the John Carroll Blue Streaks and the Wooster Fighting Scots were set to square off for a non-conference matchup.
Almost four hours after they were supposed to start, neither team could cash in and the match ended in a scoreless draw.
The Blue and Gold were somewhat at a disadvantage in terms of offense without top goal scorer senior
Bailey Fischer heading into tonight's game.
"Not having Bailey obviously has us sorting some things out but it's giving other players the chance for some great opportunities," said JCU head coach
Michael Marich.
So the Blue Streak defense stepped up.
To open up the contest, the Fighting Scots displayed dominance in possession of the ball, effectively moving the ball around the pitch. Although the eyes read one thing, the stats read another — with the numbers evening out by the end of the half. The Blue Streaks closed the gap with shots only losing in that category by a 6-5 margin.
The second half held nearly the same as the first. The Fighting Scots controlled possession for a good portion early on, keeping JCU goalie
Danielle DelGiudice on her toes. She would finish with eight saves on the night and her first career shutout.
Regulation would not be enough for these two teams to settle on a final score, so these two forces took their competition into overtime The extra 20 minutes did not yield many scoring opportunities on a muggy night, and the contest ended without a goal for either side.
The Fighting Scots led the way in shots with a 14-7 advantage.
"It's good to get a tie after the lightning delay. I was proud of our team's focus through the adversity, continuing to battle through the heat during the game" said Marich following the scoreless outing.
In this 27th meeting between these two programs, it was just the third tie. The series now stands 16-9-3 in favor of Wooster, while JCU's home record against the Fighting Scots moves to 8-2-1. The Blue Streaks have not lost to Wooster at home since 2010.
John Carroll's record is now 1-1-1 following tonight's match, while Wooster's mark is 2-0-1.
This was the first of three games in five days for the Blue and Gold have three games in five days. Marich hopes the team sees this challenge as a positive.
"It is a good chance to create some more opportunities and have our players step-up and become leaders," said Marich.
The Blue Streaks will travel to Lexington, Kentucky, to take on Transylvania University in a non-conference matchup this Friday, September 7th, at 7:00Â pm.
