For the last six years, the home team could not find a way to claim a victory in the series between John Carroll and Ohio Northern.
So the Blue Streaks went against their recent tendencies and opened up the passing game -- a passing game that was ranked dead last in the Ohio Athletic Conference for yards per game.
The result was a 44-10 triumph for the host John Carroll Blue Streaks Saturday at Don Shula Stadium, marking the first win by a home team since 2012.
The 34-point victory came about by "everyone doing their job", a message that was repeated many times postgame by a slew of players.
Quarterback
Jake Floriea had his best game as a Blue Streak. The junior quarterback threw for 289 yards on 11-of-15 passing for a single-game school record six touchdowns.
"It obviously felt really good. We were celebrating on the sidelines," Floriea said standing on the turf after the game. "It is not really about me, it's all about the other guys around me. They were doing their job every play. It made my job easy. Hit the guy that is open."
Floriea's longest play of the game came on the opening series of to
Evan Nugent, who caught half of Floriea's touchdown passes in the victory. Floriea's 73-yard touchdown to Nugent immediately put JCU ahead 7-0.
Nugent finished with three receptions for 132 yards and three touchdowns.
"Today especially, everyone came out today and did their job," Nugent said afterward. "The o-line was blocking really well. Jake was just throwing it out there and we had to make plays."
Midway through the first quarter, Floriea found Nugent for his second score, an 18-yard toss. The final connection was on the opening series of the second quarter as Floriea found the senior receiver in stride for a 41-yard gain.
The Blue Streaks established a 23-3 lead early in the third quarter.
"It is a testament to those players and coaches," said head coach
Rick Finotti. "Jake [Floriea] was really efficient with the pass.
Evan Nugent … the backs. Keyshawn [Colmon] had a good day. We had a lot of catches today. That shows a good quarterback. A guy that can disperse it and go through his reads and be efficient with the football."Â
Then, it was once again Colmon that came up with the score that put the game away. He caught a 30-yard strike from Floriea with 10:04 left in the third quarter for a 30-3 Blue Streaks advantage.
Floriea's final two touchdowns came from his running backs
Michael Canganelli and
Matthew Buser. The Canganelli touchdown was set up by a blocked punt by
Luke Brown.
John Carroll, which was averaging a league-low 167.8 passing yards per contest, racked up a season-high 304 yards through the air. Floriea set a single game school record by averaging 26.3 yards per completion. Six of his 11 completions were for touchdowns.
Offense was hard to come by for the Polar Bears. JCU held the ONU offense that entered the game averaging 400 yards of total offense to 225 yards, the last 88 of which came in the final five minutes on the final drive of the game when the score was 44-3.
Over half of those yards came from one of the nation's top rushers in Christiaan Williams. He rushed for 127 yards on 25 carries, of which 47 were on the final drive.
Starting quarterback Anthony McFadden's No. 13 national pass efficiency ranking will take a hit, as the Blue Streaks sacked him four times and held him to just 124 passing yards.
"That defense is the heart and soul of this program," said Finotti. "Just the way we play defense -- If you have a tough defense, you have a tough football team. It starts with that defensive line every day."
Defensive lineman
Cal Reynolds sacked McFadden twice. Linebacker
Nick Urbanowicz hauled in his first career interception with five minutes remaining in the third quarter -- McFadden's second pick of the season.
The Polar Bears 10 points came from an early field goal and a touchdown with eight seconds left.
"Our goal is to win. Our goal on defense was a shutout. It carries over from what we do in practice into the game," said Reynolds, "We showed up to play. We did our job. All 11 guys did their job. That is what happens."
Reigning OAC Special Teams Player of the Week
Anthony Lupo put a 35-yard boot through the uprights and ONU's Dom DiFalco answered with a field goal from 36-yards out in the second quarter.Â
Lupo's four successful extra points moved him into 15th all-time.Â
Following the strong defensive showing, the Blue and Gold have only allowed a total of 20 points over the last three games.Â
Senior
Chad Stalnaker led the Blue Streaks with eight tackles and sophomore
Hunter Orlando added seven, including a team-best two for loss. Â JCU had five sacks for 41 yards and nine tackles for loss overall for 48 yards. They also recovered two fumbles and broke up six passes.
JCU improves to 5-1 on the season and 4-1 in the OAC. Ohio Northern falls to 3-3 overall and 3-2 in league play.
The Blue Streaks will travel down to Marietta next week to play the Pioneers. The Blue and Gold are yet to lose a game against Marietta.Â
