Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Grabs Control Of Conference Race With Impressive 1-0 Win At Ohio Northern

A score from an unlikely source delivered John Carroll one of its most impressive wins of the season.

Chase Fernkorn's side winding strike off a William Turrittin corner was the lone goal scored in what became a 1-0 John Carroll victory Ohio Northern Saturday night in Ada.

For Fernkorn, it was his second career goal and his first since a tally against Kenyon on September 3rd.

Ohio Northern came into the game ranked higher in the United Soccer Coaches poll (#19) than John Carroll (#22), but the Blue Streaks were #13 in the d3soccer.com poll while the Polar Bears were unranked.

The first half was a back-and-forth battle with only four shots attempted between the two teams.

The second half opened up more, and the Blue Streaks took advantage when Turritin delivered his 10th assist of the year (already the fourth most in a single season in JCU history) on the corner which Fernkorn converted.

JCU withstood some immediate pressure after the goal and was able to control possession enough to limit the Polar Bears to just three shots over the final 24 minutes. Connor Robinson needed to make only one save after the JCU goal.

Both teams attempted six shots and six corners.

John Carroll improves to 11-2-2 overall and 4-0-1 in the OAC, while Ohio Northern falls to 11-4-1 and 3-2-0 in the conference. With Wilmington's loss to Marietta, John Carroll now has 13 points in the OAC standings to take a lead over Wilmington (10), Ohio Northern (9), Otterbein (9) and Capital (9). Only four regular season matches remain.
