Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Moves One Step Closer To OAC Regular Season Title With Win On Senior NIght

No team has won more Ohio Athletic Conference regular season men's soccer titles than John Carroll, which has captured 11 crowns since joining the league in 1989.

Tonight, the Blue Streaks moved one step closer to capturing their 12th title. A 2-0 victory over Marietta earned while playing through a torrential downpour Saturday night at Don Shula Stadium leaves JCU one win away from that next trophy on the mantle.

Prior to the start of the game, John Carroll honored it's four seniors.  Justin Brown, Mitch Kotheimer, Jarrod McDowell, and Matt Nigro have had a fantastic four years, going to the NCAA tournament each of the last three years.

The Blue Streaks wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. Justin Mattei was dragged down in the box in the fourth minute of the game.  That set up a William Turrittin penalty kick goal to give the Blue Streaks an early 1-0 lead.

The rest of the first half saw John Carroll fire shot after shot on good set up opportunities but none of them could find the net.  Their defense would hold strong, lead by goalkeeper Connor Robinson whose one save in the opening 45 minutes was spectacular. JCU was on top 1-0 going into half.

"I really have an easy job so it's not hard to stay ready to make a play because the defense does such a good job" said Robinson. "We just need to keep our minds right and treat every game like a new one."

JCU maintained its one goal lead until just under 20 minutes left in the second half. That was when Brown crossed the ball to the middle of the field and found a streaking Will Grubbs, who found the back of the net to make the score 2-0. This was Grubbs' first career goal.

"I was supposed to make the back post run and thankfully the ball got through to me and I was able to finish," said Grubbs. "I didn't really know what to do after the goal, but I liked the feeling and am going to keep trying to fill the stat sheet."

John Carroll moved to 13-2-2 on the year and 6-0-1 in OAC play.  John Carroll owns a four-point lead over Otterbein for the top seed in the conference with two matches left to play. JCU needs to win one of its final two matches to clinch the championship.

Next time out for the Blue Streaks they will play at home against Heidelberg (3-11-1, 1-6 OAC) Wednesday night, which is the final scheduled regular season game at Shula Stadium.
