Dominant and efficient.
A wet and cold Saturday afternoon in University Heights, Ohio, was the scene for a dominant and efficient performance form the John Carroll University Blue Streaks.Â
John Carroll downed the visiting Wilmington College Quakers, 42-0, in what represents John Carroll's final home regular season game. The Blue Streaks improve to 7-1 overall and 6-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) ahead of the final two regular season games.Â
Jake Floriea led the offensive attack for the Blue Streaks with four total touchdowns. His 210 passing yards aided in the balanced John Carroll offensive attack that managed 373 yards of total offense. The 99 yards on the ground came from seven different rushers for the Blue Streaks.Â
The Blue and Gold defense held Wilmington to just 106 yards of total offense and forced four turnovers en route to its second shutout of the year.
Harrison Richardson and
Conner Bogard each recorded a team high six total tackles.Â
Saturday's dominant performance comes on the same day John Carroll honors 16 seniors from the 2019 roster. As a unit, the class of 2020 accounts for over 30 victories, two NCAA playoff appearances and were a part of the 2016 OAC championship season.Â
John Carroll's offense scored early and often to put this OAC contest to bed early.Â
Floriea opened the contest with a 57-year pass to
Will Mercurio, setting John Carroll up with a first and goal within the first minute of the game. Floriea capped off the two-play drive with a 10-year rushing touchdown – the only rushing score for the Blue Streaks on the day.Â
Floriea and
Evan Nugent added two scores from 34-yards and 19-yards respectively to give the Blue Streaks a 21-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.Â
Nugent accounted for three touchdown receptions – including one from
Joe Collins – as he led the team with five total receptions for 97 yards.
Matthew Buser was on the receiving end of two scores from Floriea to round of the scoring.Â
Efficiency was the name of the game for the Blue Streaks' offense. Its longest scoring drive was just eight plays with three drives producing points with three plays or less. John Carroll was 5-for-11 on third downs and averaged 6.54 yards per play.Â
Wilmington's offensive attack couldn't crack John Carroll's defensive approach. The visitors were forced into five three and outs and four turnovers. The 42-0 victory is the second shutout from the Blue Streaks' defense and sixth time John Carroll has held an opponent under 10 points in a game this season.
John Carroll will finish out the regular season schedule with trips to Heidelberg University and Baldwin Wallace University.
