Second Half Rally By John Carroll Leads To 95-89 Upset Victory Over 14th-Ranked Whitworth

Apparently, a break was needed.

Exactly two weeks ago, the John Carroll University men's basketball team lost its third consecutive game, undermining what had been a promising 5-0 start to the season.

This afternoon, promise was restored in thrilling fashion.

In the first meeting between the John Carroll and #14 ranked Whitworth (which hails from Spokane, Washington), a dramatic play in the final 30 seconds lifted the Blue Streaks to a 95-89 victory.

Credit the dramatics to an unworldly shot by Sean Flannery.

With the game deadlocked at 89 points with 19 seconds to play, Flannery backed up from well beyond the arc to drain a three-pointer as the shot clock expired to put JCU ahead 92-89.

Flannery drew a foul in the process and made it a two possession game with a made free throw. Over the remaining 18 seconds, the Pirates did not get a shot off against the stingy Blue and Gold defense.

Flannery's three was the most important three of the game but it was not the only shot by a JCU player from beyond the arc to gain recognition.

At the 17:17 mark of the first half Jackson Sartain drained his second three pointer of the game, breaking the JCU all-time three-point field goal record.

Sartain — who also holds the all-time single season three-point record, as well as the best three-point percentage, passed Danny Willick passed Danny Wallack's previous mark of 221.

JCU played from behind for the majority of the second half, until finally Connor Fitzgerald icing the game with a three-point field goal to tie it at 74 with 8:16 to play.

Whitworth responded with a 9-2 run, a margin seemingly big enough to seal the victory. The Blue Streaks answered with a 13-6 scoring spree to tie the game at 89.

Flannery's shot kept it that way for Whitworth and improved JCU's record to 6-3 on the season and an undefeated 6-0 in non-conference play.

In the first half, both teams traded shots but the Blue Streaks eventually led 23-21 with 11:25 left to play before the break. Whitworth responded a 15-2 run, aiding to a 56-46 halftime lead.

Sartain led the Blue Streaks with 14 points scored in the opening half, he finished with 19 points.

Jimmy Berger played an instrumental role in JCU's comeback with 10 points in the final 12 minutes of the contest. Berger and Flannery each finished with 15 points and six assists each. Berger also led the team with eight rebounds

The most impressive shooting day was by Emmett Chambers, who finished with 18 points off eight made shots in nine attempts from the field.

The Blue Streaks play Keene State tomorrow in the second game of the E.M. "Mose" Hole/Wooster Kiwanis Classic/Great Lakes Invitational.
