The Blue Streaks reached double figures in runs scored for the seventh time in their first 14 games -- which has never been done before in the 47-year history of the program -- as John Carroll avenged a Saturday loss to Transylvania with an 11-8 victory on Sunday afternoon over the Pioneers.
John Carroll was beating Transylvania yesterday by a score of 4-3 going into the seventh inning, and the Pioneers scored seven runs to put the game out of reach. Â In a reversal of fate, the Blue Streaks were trailing 3-2 going into the seventh when they scored seven runs to make the score 9-3.
The Blue Streaks sent
Andrew Steele to the mound looking to avenge their loss from yesterday. Â Steele came into today with a 3-0 record and a 1.97 ERA. The only time that Steele got into trouble was in the fifth when he allowed three unearned runs.
Steele finished the day with 5.2 innings pitched and six strikeouts but received a no decision.
Kasey Anzelc came in relief and got a strikeout to end the inning.
Sam Heaton kicked off the scoring in the seventh by doubling home
Derek Penman and
Christian Cassaro. Â A couple of batter later,
Joe Charpentier plated a pair of runs to push the Blue Streak lead even further. Â
Justin Hanley and
David Ferguson hit back to back doubles to drive in three total runs. Â After all was said and done, the Blue Streaks held a six-run lead.
John Carroll tacked on a couple more runs in the eighth to answer the Pioneers three run rally in the seventh to make the lead 11-6.
The Pioneers made it interesting by scoring two runs in the eighth. Â Then, Transylvania loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, and brought the winning run to the plate in a 11-8 game, but Nick Michel got his first career save by striking out the final batter.
Michel didn't allow a run in the final inning, which helped the Blue Streaks avenge their loss to the Pioneers yesterday and bumped them up into double digits in the win column for a season record of 10-4. It is just the seventh time in program history that JCU has won at least 10 of their first 14 games.
The Blue Streaks won't play again until next Wednesday when they travel to Delaware, Ohio to take on Ohio Wesleyan at 4 p.m.
