For a brief moment on Tuesday afternoon, literally a span of ten minutes, the Blue Streaks had momentum. And it was almost enough to steal game one.
For the rest of the moments, it was all Case Western Reserve.
The long ball was the difference, as the red hot Spartans cleared the Bracken Field fence six time over two games to sweep the Blue Streaks, 6-4 and 10-1.
It was the first non-conference sweep at home for John Carroll since April 26, 2017 -- also against CWRU
Game One
Ilissa Hamilton was in complete control for Case Western reserve, allowing just one hit over the first six innings while her offense (of which she contributed the first two runs with a two-run home run) built a 6-0 lead.
It was actually a scoreless game over the first four innings as John Carroll senior pitcher Jess Cook was solid in holding CWRU -- an offense with eight players batting over .300 -- to just two hits in those first four frames.
But then came the fifth, where three different players over four at bats left the yard. The first were hit off Cook, the third off reliever
Elizabeth O'Grady.
The Spartans tacked on single runs in the top of the sixth and top of the seventh to build a 6-0 lead. Those last two tallies loomed large in the outcome.
With one out,
Quinn Sobieszczanski singled for just the second John Carroll hit of the game. She was still on first base with two outs when
Kristen Jesberger homered to left center to break up the shutout.
JCU was not done.
Olivia Schweiger,
Miranda Noday and
Crista Nativio had back-to-back-to-back singles, the last of which scored Schweiger to make the score 6-3.
Lindsay McKnight then stepped up and doubled down the left field line. The ball got past the outfielder but kicked into out of play territory, effectively making the play a ground rule double. Only Noday scored, leaving McKnight at second and Nativio at third. The score was 6-4.
Hamilton was then able to end the game with a called third strike on
Elizabeth Fraas.
Nativio was the lone Blue Streaks with multiple hits in the game.
Game Two
Case Western took the second game of afternoon by a final score of 10-0, ending matters after just five innings.
Nicole Doyle scored the first run for Case Western to establish a 1-0 lead after the top of the opening inning. In the top of the second inning Arisa Cleaveland earned an RBI to extend the early lead to 2-0.
Jenn Patterson struck out the side, allowing only one run in three hits to get out of the inning.
In the top of the third inning, freshman Liv Thomas extended the lead to three, sending Case Western Reserve's fifth home run of the afternoon over the right field fence.
The Spartans would put two more notches on the scoreboard to make the score 5-0 after three turns at bat.
Madison Eagle relieved Patterson in the top of the fourth inning for the Blue Streaks, and was effective at the start. Her defense secured three outs in four batters, with Eagle allowing only one hit.
Hamilton started the top of the fifth with a solo home run to move CWRU's lead to 7-0. That kick started a four-run frame that effectively put the game out of reach.Â
John Carroll falls to 9-7 on the season, while Case Western moves to 11-5.
