Refreshed Blue Streaks Bat The Ball Around In Victory Over Bridgewater

The Blue Streaks used their day off yesterday well.  The team looked well rested and ready to play.

The scoreboard was validation, as the Blue Streaks erupted for 15 runs and 15 hits and took full advantage of eight errors from their opponents to defeat Bridgewater, 15-1, Thursday afternoon in Davenport, Florida.

Andrew Steele took the hill for the first time of his career as a starter against the Eagles of Bridgewater.  Last year, Steele tied the single season record for saves in program history, but this year Steele has seen outings of multiple innings.

Steele didn't allow a run in the game and struck out at least one batter in every inning, for a grand total of seven for the game.  What makes this outing more impressive is that Steele's longest bullpen session has only gone for a maximum of 60 pitches, and today he finished around the 90-pitch mark.

"I tried to compete on every pitch and that helped me throw more pitches than I had to before," said Steele. "No matter if I'm out of the bullpen or in the starting rotation I'm going to do whatever I can to help my team win."

Eric Payne came into relieve Steele and picked up right where he left off.  Striking out four over three innings and only allowing one run, to combine the Blue Streaks pitchers for 11 strikeouts to one run allowed.

The offense also did their part to add to John Carroll's win column, starting early on a Patrick Keohane single, who later scored on a Dom Mittiga single in the first. Mittiga would come around to score on a David Ferguson single to make the score 2-0 after one inning.

The Blue Streaks added single tallies in the second and third to make the score 4-0.

In the fifth inning the Blue Streaks added three more runs to their lead after batting around in the inning, scoring in the inning were Keohane, Christian Cassaro, and Derek Penman.

Just like the fifth inning, the sixth inning also saw the John Carroll plate three runs.  The bottom of the order started this rally when Penman tripled Ben Surman home. Penman would come around to score along with Cassaro to make the score 10-0.

Bridgewater College scored one in the top of the seventh, but the Blue Streaks answered with five runs of their own.

The Blue Streaks move to 6-2 on the year and Steele goes to 3-0, while the Eagles move to 3-8.

John Carroll will play a double header against Waynesburg tomorrow with the first game starting at 1 pm.
