Box Score In their final game of their Florida trip, the John Carroll University baseball team defeated the Bulldogs of DeSales University on Saturday morning.
John Carroll came into today with a 4-3 record during their Florida trip. Hoping to keep their record above .500, the Blue and Gold sent
Mitchell Midea to the mound.
Midea threw a seven-inning gem against Bridgewater on Tuesday. The Freshman didn't get off to a good start when Desales scored two runs in the first inning despite not getting a hit. Midea would surrender a run on two hits in the second to put the Blue Streaks down 3-0 after two innings.
From the third inning on, it was all Blue Streaks. With the first seven batters all reaching base safely, John Carroll scoring five runs by the inning's end.
The fourth looked similar to the third, except the Blue Streaks scored six runs instead of five to take an impressive 11-3 lead. This lead gave Midea the cushion he needed to dominate.
Midea wouldn't allow a hit past the second inning. Midea struck out five of the last seven Bulldogs he faced to ensure that he would only allow three total runs over his six innings of work.
Dominic Mittiga put the nail in the coffin when he homered in the fifth inning to make score 13-3, which ultimately became the final score. Mittiga ended the game with three hits and five RBIs, scoring three runs.
"RBI's are a tough stat" said Mittiga. "They are truly a team stat and I got to credit Pat (
Patrick Keohane) and Sam (
Sam Heaton) and the bottom for getting on and putting me in a position to drive them in."
The last three hitters in the Blue Streak line-up helped turn the top well, going 6-10.
Derek Penman, Matt Springer, and
Christian Cassaro had two hits apiece.
John Carroll ends the Florida trip with a 5-3 record, pushing their season record to 8-3. DeSales drops to 3-6 on the year.
The Blue Streaks next travel to Lexington, Kentucky next weekend, March 16-17, to take on Transylvania and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
