Blue Streaks Bring The Bats To Pennsylvania For Most Productive Scoring Day Of The Season

In 26 games this season, the Blue Streaks have only fell behind the eight ball twice in regards to being down after the first inning. The first time was on March 9 against DeSales University in Davenport, Florida, — JCU won that game 13-3. The other was today against Westminster in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, where the Blue Streaks defeated the Titans 21-9 scoring their second most runs on the season.

While it was not the highest scoring game, it was the team's most productive, collecting a season-best 21 RBI.

It did not come easy, believe it or not… at least initially.

The Titans of Westminster notched a three run inning off four hits off of Blue Streaks freshman starting pitcher Jack Bennett in his first career start to kick-off the game.

JCU responded with a three run second inning, following RBI singles from freshman Matt Springer and senior Dominic Mittiga, fellow senior Patrick Keohane drove in Springer off the lone extra base hit of the inning. The Blue and Gold did so all with two outs against them, shelling four hits in total during the inning.

John Carroll found difficulty holding a powerful Titans offense back from scoring, as Westminster immediately countered with a two-run second inning to take a 5-3 lead.

After a scoreless third inning a sacrifice fly by junior Aaron Zawadzki cut the Blue Streaks deficit down to one run, but the Titans answered again with another run scored increasing the lead to 6-4 in their favor.

The fourth inning ended Bennett's day. The good was he struck out five batters, the bad was he allowed eight hits and six runs.

It took up until the fifth inning for the Blue Streaks bats to get going but once they did, it was quite evident why JCU has one of the top offenses in the nation.

Springer smacked a two RBI triple, tying the game at six runs a piece; Keohane knocked the ball over the left center field wall, supplying JCU with the 8-6 edge. The Titans replaced starting pitcher Emilio Rivera after his 12 hit, seven earned run showing.

As JCU hit the defensive end, freshman Henry Haracz took the mound for JCU and pitched the fifth inning retiring all three batters.

When the sixth inning rolled around, Westminster was unsure of what was coming. The Blue and Gold went digging for gold and found six runs. The inning commenced with an RBI walk from senior John Bondi and concluded with an RBI walk from sophomore Matthew Thiel. Familiar faces in Springer, Keohane, and senior Derek Penman all added RBI singles; Keohane's totaled two. JCU led 14-6 after six.

Minch's day finished following seven earned runs and six hits surrendered. Westminster elected to have Brandon Cooper replace Minch but he did not quite get the job done either.

The Blue Streaks added four more runs onto the scoreboard in the seventh inning off two hits. Two of those runs scored off a Keohane single. JCU contributed three more insurance runs in the eighth. The Blue and Gold held the 21-6 lead.

Westminster scored three more runs but their efforts would not be enough.

Sophomore Kasey Anzelc was dominant in his two innings of relief for the Blue Streaks, striking out two batters and retiring the other four batters faced. Freshman Tate Larrance struck two batters out as well, only allowing two hits and one earned run.

"A big part of our future is in our dugout, so it's nice when everyone can get a chance to contribute regardless of the score," said coach Ryan Nordquist. "Yesterday's loss was Yesterday.  The goal today was to play our own way and get better with every outcome."

Keohane was the game's MVP, going 5-for-7, knocking in six batters, adding a double and a home run. He also tied the record for most runs scored in JCU history after scoring five in today's game to put him at 141 for his career.

Penman punched four hits and four RBI and Springer slated three hits and four RBI with one less at-bat.

With the win the Blue Streaks are now 19-7 on the season, going 12-5 in non-conference games. John Carroll will transition back into conference play this Saturday against Ohio Northern on April 13 with plans to host their first home game at Schweickert Field this season.
