JCU Womens Lacrosse Begins Postseason Push With Victory At Marietta

After dropping four straight games, the John Carroll Blue Streaks returned to their winning ways with a dominating performance against the Marietta Pioneers, defeating their conference foe 21-4.

John Carroll moves to 8-6 overall and 3-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while Marietta falls to 2-13 with an 0-7 showing in the OAC.

The win also moves the Blue Streaks into a fourth place tie in the league standings with two games left to play in the regular season. The top four teams advance to the OAC Tournament.

The Blue Streaks wasted no time in jumping out to a commanding lead.  Within the first three and a half minutes of play, Sophie Brandimarte, Alex Heishman, Alexis Guage, and Brooke McQuinn had found the back of the Pioneer net.  Heishman's goal continues her incredible 14-game goal scoring streak. She would eventually finish the match with five goals to her tally, matching her career high.

McQuinn added three more goals to the John Carroll scoreboard in the next seven minutes, increasing the Blue Streak lead to six goals with 19 minutes still remaining in the first half.  Over the course of the game, she would accumulate five more ground balls and cause two turnovers. Of the 21 draw controls JCU won, McQuinn snagged 16 compared to the entire Pioneer's team total of four.

Marietta was able to unleash their first shot almost seven minutes into the contest, resulting in their first goal. Elyssa Zablo would relinquish just two goals before Kaleigh Kotula filled the role as John Carroll netfinder. Kotula also let up two goals.

In the first half, John Carroll monopolized the stats, winning in the shots column 30-4, crushing the Pioneers in ground balls 25-5, and completed all four of their clear attempts as compared to Marietta's completion ratio of 5-11.

Emma Workman, Colleen Grombala, Heishman, Brandimarte, and McQuinn added more goals to the Blue Streak tally before the first half buzzer sounded.  Ending the first thirty minutes of action on an especially high note was Carly Ross. Scoring her seventh goal of her opening season with less than two minutes to go, she battled into the final seconds of the half, netting yet another shot with just seven seconds left.  Ross's late contributions sent JCU to the locker room in full command with a 15-2 lead.

The second half of competition proved to be more of the same as John Carroll handled the Pioneers with ease.  Nine total Blue Streaks got on the board, including Molly Carroll and Jill Jarem in the second half. Carroll's goal was the first of her career, solidifying the beginning of her legacy for the Blue and Gold.

Guage scored within the first minute of the second half, and Heishman would add another for the Blue Streaks late in the match. Brandimarte scored her third goal of the day with just under six minutes remaining off a Free Position attempt, joining McQuinn and Heishman as the game's hat trick heroes.

Grombala (6), McQuinn (5), Sophie Grabowski (5), Bittany Pritchard (5), Sydney Lang (4) and Guage (4) all contributed to John Carroll's 44 ground balls -- its highest total of the season.

John Carroll will do battle with Heidelberg this Wednesday, April 24th at 7 p.m. for their final home match of the regular season.
