There is much to debate in the sports world about the meaning of rankings and whether or not a team's ranking is justified.
Ad far as John Carroll is concerned, Wesleyan College deserves its number five ranking in the latest ITA/Oracle poll. The Cardinals swept the doubles and posted two quick singles wins to eliminate the Blue Streaks, 5-0, in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship Saturday at the Johns Hopkins University Courts in Baltimore, Maryland.
Andrew Triner and
Gustavo Garcia were on serve early at 4-3 at #2 doubles, but the tandem of Princeton Carter and Jonathan Holtzman won four of the last five games to take an 8-4 deicison. Virtually the same scenario played out at #3 doubles, where
Adi Jha and
Parker Holyn fell to Andrew Finkelman and Marcus Sweeney, 8-4.
The top ranked doubles team in the Northeast Region, Adrian Roji and Noah Lilienthal, won by an 8-0 score at #1 doubles over Andrew Siciliano and
David Sinense.
An uphill climb awaited the Blue Streaks in singles play, made all the more difficult with all six matches going the way of Wesleyan in the first sets. Triner had the best showing by battling to a 6-3 final at #5 singles against Zach Fleischman.
In the end, Wesleyan was able to close out matters with sweeps at #2 and #4 singles.
John Carroll's season ends at 10-10 overall and the program's third appearance in the NCAA Championship round of 32.
