For the second time in three days, John Carroll used a goal in the final minute of play to secure a one-goal victory.
This time, it was against a team ranked in the top 25 of two national polls.
William Turrittin's penalty kick with 35 seconds remaining lifted the Blue Streaks to a 2-1 victory over the University of Rochester Sunday afternoon in Rochester, New York. The Yellow Jackets were ranked #4 in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll and #23 by d3soccer.com.
It was also Turrittin who scored with 30 seconds left Friday to propel JCU to a 3-2 win over Oberlin at home.
Turrittin had a hand in the first John Carroll as well. With less than two minutes remaining in the first half, Turrittin lifted the ball from the right corner to the back post where
Matt Nigro knocked it into the goal.
The 1-0 JCU lead held until late in regulation. A foul in the box in the 86th minute supplied Rochester with a penalty kick, and Josh Cooley converted to tie the score at 1-1.
The match appeared that it would head to overtime until the play that led to the penalty kick that was awarded for John Carroll.
Rochester (0-2) held the edge in total shots, 12-8, while actually shots on goal were even at 6-6.
Tommy Galina had four saves as John Carroll improved to 2-0.
