Capital Plays Spoiler Once Again As John Carroll Comes Up One Point Short

Capital head coach Damon Goodwin may schedule "Mike Moran Days" every time he comes to University Heights.

Three years ago, in Mike Moran's last regular season home game as John Carroll head coach, Goodwin's Crusaders ruined the party by beating the Blue Streaks, 76-75.

Today, as Mike Moran was honored for his impending induction into the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame, Capital once again played the role of spoiler. John Carroll looked to keep its six-game win streak alive this afternoon at the DeCarlo Varsity Center afternoon, but came up short in the final seconds of play, falling to the Crusaders, 73-72.

In the first five minutes of play, Capital outplayed John Carroll on offense, giving them an early five point lead, but it didn't last long. In the next ten minutes, the Blue Streaks scored 10 points, putting them ahead of the Crusaders 16-9 with just under nine minutes to play in the half.

The remainder of the half was a back and forth ball game. At one point, Capital held a one point advantage, but John Carroll carried the lead into halftime 35-32.

The game remained close throughout the second half. John Carroll's biggest lead came at the beginning of the half, where they owned a five-point cushion over the Crusaders. But the home team could never pull away, With seven minutes remaining in regulation the Blue Streaks and Crusaders were tied at 61.

In the final minute and a half, Capital held a four point lead over John Carroll, but a three pointer from Connor Fitzgerald sliced the Blue Streaks deficit to one with 55 seconds remaining. Despite hustle on both ends of the floor from the Blue Streaks in the final seconds of play, they could not up with a game winner.

Emmett Chambers paced the Blue Streaks on offense tallying 22 points and nine rebounds. Ryan Berger contributed an additional 15 points and five rebounds as John Carroll fell to 11-4 overall and 4-4 in the OAC.

Capital, which shot 18-33 (.545) in the second half, improved to 8-7 overall and 4-4 in league play.

The Blue and Gold travel to Berea, OH to take on cross-town rival Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday at 7pm.
