With three OAC teams sitting at 9-8 in the conference, and two more sitting at 8-9 in the conference, John Carroll men's basketball had a lot to play for in its final regular-season game of the 2019-20 season.
Depending on the results of this game and the other games around the OAC, the Blue and Gold could have ended up anywhere between the three-seed and six-seed in the conference postseason tournament.Â
That beings aid, the Blue Streaks had decent control of its own destiny. A win today at Wilmington would insure a home game for the quarterfinal round
Today's 84-67 road win, coupled with other results going the Blue Streaks' way, has earned them the three-seed and a home game to start the OAC tournament.
Wilmington came out hot and scored the first two field goals of the game to give them a 4-0 lead. John Carroll responded quickly, made a few shots and took an 8-6 lead on a
Jackson Sartain made three-pointer. For the remaining 37 minutes of the matchup, the Blue Streaks stayed in front.Â
John Carroll gained their first double-digit advantage on a
Sean Flannery made three-pointer ten minutes into the first half. Wilmington fought back and got the game to within five, but John Carroll would not let it get any closer than that. Another Flannery three-pointer with 49 seconds to go in the half gave the Blue Streaks a double-digit lead once again. John Carroll led Wilmington 49-39 at the intermission.Â
The teams traded points throughout the first part of the second half until a 12-1 run sparked by
Jimmy Berger and
Ryan Berger gave the Blue Streaks a 17-point advantage with just over five minutes remaining. From there on out, John Carroll never looked back.Â
History was made with 2:30 remaining in the second half. Sartain knocked down his second three-pointer of the game and his 276th three-pointer of his storied career to break the Ohio Athletic Conference record for career three-point field goals made. Matt Adams of Heidelberg previously held the record of 275 for 25 years. Sartain finished the game with 12 points.
Ryan Berger led the Blue Streaks with a game-high 18 points, while
Jimmy Berger followed with 15 points, eight rebounds, and five assists.
Emmett Chambers added 14 points and six rebounds and Flannery scored 11 for John Carroll.Â
The Blue Streaks will be back in action this Tuesday as they host Capital University in their first-round matchup of the OAC tournament. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. at the Tony DeCarlo Varsity Center.Â
