Softball Splits on Sunny Day 4 with Bridgewater and Aurora

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The John Carroll softball team went 1-1 for a second day, with a 4-3 win over Bridgewater College and a 10-4 loss over Aurora University on the fourth day of games in Florida at Legends Way Ballfields as part of the Spring Games Tournament.

Freshman center fielder Gracie Bressoud led the Blue Streaks' efforts at the plate today, hitting .625 going 5-for-8 with two stolen bases. Senior third baseman Elizabeth Fraas, sophomore left fielder Emma Gurley, and sophomore designated player/catcher Kasyn Scarantine all went 3-for-7 at the plate today with Gurley and Scarantine combining for three stolen bases.

GAME 1
Bridgewater was first to score, tallying one run in the bottom of the second. With no outs and runners at second and third, senior pitcher Jenn Patterson shut down any chances of more runs crossing the plate with three-straight strikeouts.

JCU took that energy into its at next at-bat, starting the inning with a pair of singles by freshman second baseman Lauren Seinkeiwicz and Bressoud. With runners in scoring position and only one out, sophomore catcher/designated player Kristen Jesberger drilled one out to center field for two and brought home both runners to give the Blue Streaks a 2-1 lead. But John Carroll wasn't done yet as Scarantine and Fraas hit another pair of back-to-back base hits with Fraas driving in a run for the 3-1 lead. Scarantine rounded home for the final run of the inning.

The Eagles put pressure on JCU, leaving the bases loaded in the fourth, two on in the fifth, and finally scoring a run in the sixth to cut the deficit to two, 4-2. On one out in the bottom of the seventh with runners on the corners, Bridgewater brought another home. With two outs and runners at first and second, Patterson finished the complete game with her sixth strikeout to seal the 4-3 victory.

GAME 2
John Carroll and Aurora traded runs through the first and the second innings, with Fraas and sophomore right fielder Crista Nativio being responsible for driving in the two runs. The Spartans added another two in the top of the third for a 4-2 lead. While Scarantine opened the bottom of the third with a double to right field she was left stranded on third.

Aurora added another run in the fourth and it wasn't until the bottom of the fifth when JCU would bring another run home. Freshman infielder Gia Caldrone came in and did what she had to do, moving Scarantine to second and bringing Gurley home to cut the score to 5-3.

However, the Spartans opened the top of the sixth with a double and kept rolling, scoring four runs for a 9-3 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Bressoud stole home for the lone run of the inning and the last one the Blue Streaks would score in the game.

Aurora tallied one more in the top of the seventh for the 10-4 win, as John Carroll ran out of steam in the home half.

Head Coach Nicole Loudin was happy with the way that her team was able to get themselves out of some tough situations. "I was proud of how we answered back in game one," she said. "Jenn put the team on her back; she pitched like the senior veteran we know she is. In game two, we unfortunately ran out of gas but we still went head-to-head with a team that came into the game 6-2."

John Carroll returns to action tomorrow for its final two games in Florida. The Blue Streaks will play Adrian College at 10:15 a.m. and then Lebanon Valley College at approximately 12:15 p.m. at Hancock Fields.
