JCU Baseball Ends 2020 Spring Trip With Five Wins In Eight Tries

Box Score On the final day of its 2020 spring trip to Florida, John Carroll fell to St. John Fisher by a score of 5-3.

The Blue Streaks trailed 3-0 until putting up a three-spot in the bottom fo the fifth inning, with David Ferguson's RBI single pushing across Henry Haracz with the tying run.

In the top of the seventh, however, the Cardinals hit a two-run home run that proved to be the deciding factor.

The Blue Streaks finish their mini-series with St. John Fisher with a 2-1 record and will leave Florida having won five of their eight games played here. That moves John Carroll's record for the season to 7-4.

It was a tough trip for the offense as only two regulars - Heaton (379) and Ferguson (.333) hit over .300 for the week.

For the pitchers, it was another story entirely. The staff ERA was 2.95, and opposing batters managed to hit just .201 against the Blue Streaks. In 61 innings pitched, JCU arms amassed 51 strikeouts while walking just 27.

Henry Darrow, Erich Payne, Jack Bennett and Matthew Aukerman worked at least two innings without giving up a run. Another reliever, Duncan Cappar, gave up just one run.

Mitch Midea was fantastic in two starts. He allowed just five hits and two runs in 11.1 innings, striking out 13 while walking five. Opponents batted a meager .135 against Midea.

Other starters faring well were Jon Ambro (1.80 ERA), Jack Kartsonas (.386 ERA) and Nicholas Michel (.386 ERA).

Defensively, JCU committed just eight errors all week, with three coming on the final day.
