Record Breaking Day For John Carroll Women's Lacrosse At Wooster Fueled By "Best Team Effort" Of The Season

If the Blue Streaks were supposed to play the part of the weary travelers, they must have rejected that script.

As it played out, John Carroll was more than ready to take on the Fighting Scots from the College of Wooster Saturday afternoon in Wooster, Ohio.. A program record fifth consecutive game of 20 goals or more proved that out as the Blue Streaks ambushed the host team, 21-10.

The Fighting Scots were the first to score but Colleen Grombala answered with a goal for the Blue Streaks, followed by another from Claire Mezzoprete less than thirty seconds later.

A goal tallied by Jenna Ginsberg and two back-to-back by Mary Doherty gave JCU a 5-1 advantage with 16 minutes left in the first half.

Soon after, the momentum changed and Wooster fought back to close the gap to 5-3 within two minutes.

John Carroll took back the fire and tallied five goals to Wooster's one to increase their advantage to 10-4 with 7:40 left in the opening half.

From there, the teams took turns scoring goals to achieve an 11-6 score in favor of John Carroll at half.

Less than thirty seconds into the second half, JCU had already tallied two goals, and the Blue Streaks were never threatened again.

Both goalies did an outstanding job in the net, with no additional goals for the next six minutes until Grombala tallied her fourth of the game.

Another goal by Grombala, three by Alex Heishman, and one each by Mezzoprete, Jenna Ginsberg, and Sophie Grabowski gave the Blue Streaks a 21-10 lead, making this the first time in program history that John Carroll has scored at least 20 points in five consecutive games. The previous mark had been four set back during the 2017 campaign.

The duo of Maddie Munding and Kaleigh Kotula raked in nine saves in the net.

"We are happy to be 4-1," said John Carroll head coach Rachel Dell. "We are also happy to be part of a big turnaround from a year ago when we lost to Wooster by eight goals. This year we won by 11. This has been a long hard week of competition and travel, but we came out and showed we are a strong, competitive team in our region. We played complete from top to bottom and the effort today was the best effort that this team has had .. and is one of the best efforts that this program has had."

John Carroll outscored its three opponents during its spring break week by a combined 65-22.

On the defensive side, Molly Carroll excelled with a program record of 15 ground balls and tallied an additional four caused turnovers.

On the offensive side, hat tricks by Grombala, Doherty, Heishman and Ginsberg made for JCU's fourth consecutive win.

JCU had 34 ground balls to Wooster's 23, and led 17-15 in draw controls.

John Carroll is now 4-1 overall.

Next up the Blue Streaks will travel to Oberlin to face Oberlin College at 4:00 p.m. this upcoming Wednesday, March 11th.
