Men's Track & Field Snags 2nd at ONU as Correia and Kartsonas Break Out

| By:
ADA, Ohio -- The John Carroll University Men's Track and Field team finished second of three teams in an indoor OAC meet hosted by Ohio Northern University on Saturday. The Blue Streaks finished with six wins and 10 top place finishes.

Despite not getting the meet victory, two freshmen proved their strong performances last week were no fluke.

James Kartsonas finished second in the long jump and fourth in the 60m dash last week at Otterbein, and followed that up today with a long jump victory. His jump of 6.32m was enough to get first place against five other jumpers, all from Ohio Northern. He also finished 5th in the 60m dash today, already his fourth scoring performance in all four events he has participated in through his early Blue Streak career.

Caleb Correia won the 800m last week, and followed that up this afternoon with a win in the 500m, and was a leg of the Distance Medley Relay that won first place as well. Correia is expected to be a strong middle distance runner for the Streaks, and so far has proven that he is up for the challenge at the collegiate level.

Also getting victories today were Garrett Clark (200m and 400m), Joe Backus (3K), and the Distance Medley Relay team of Ian Pierson, Mark Zahren, Caleb Correia, and Alex Phillip. Deven Ward finished second in the 60m and 200m races, and freshman John Shoemaker placed third in the Mile, and right on his heels was Keller Dittoe with a strong fourth. Zach Szafarski PR'ed and finished third in both the shot put and weight throw.

In the 800m, JCU placed five runners in the top six possible scoring positions. Gabe Earnest led the way with a strong second place, and Cormac Peppard-Kramer finished third in his first collegiate appearance.

The team finished with 13 new personal records in another strong performance after a meet victory last week. The Streaks will be back in action next Saturday February 6 in Alliance, Ohio against Heidelberg, Ohio Northern and Mount Union.
