Women's Soccer Pushes Past Pioneers in Saturday Home Victory

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- After not scoring a goal over the past three matches despite great team effort, the John Carroll Women's Soccer team more than made up for it on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Streaks defeated the Marietta College Pioneers 3-1 in University Heights, improving their record to 7-9-1 (2-5-0 OAC) on the season.

"The results haven't been coming our way," JCU Head Coach Michael Marich said. "The girls have been working hard in training. In each game, they just haven't been able to find that ball in the back of the net."

John Carroll's hard work and effort paid off early, as in the 10th minute, Brittany Dufalla scored off a deflection on a corner kick, giving the Blue Streaks a 1-0 advantage. This was Dufalla's team-leading eighth goal of the season.

With time dwindling towards the end of the first half, Marietta's Kayla Stischok scored her second goal of the season, tying the score at 1-1. This marked the Pioneers second goal so far this season in OAC play.

The score would not remain tied for long, however, as just 35 seconds into the second half, Gabriella Walter headed in a goal off a corner kick assist by Macey Malinky, giving JCU the lead 2-1.

Marich was proud of his team's response.

"Scoring a set piece and responding after giving a goal away right before half is a great way to get yourself started again."

Marietta would not go down easily, as Stischok rattled off a quality shot attempt in the 68th minute, but John Carroll goalkeeper Danielle DelGiudice made a clutch save to hold the Pioneers at bay.

Still holding the 2-1 lead, JCU was able to add an insurance goal to cement the match in the 77th minute. After being awarded a free kick near the top of the box deep in Marietta territory, Grace Monnin struck through for the goal to bring the score to 3-1.

"Obviously, the OAC is a great conference. Whether you're playing the top team or the bottom teams, you're going to have tough games," Marich stated. "Marietta pushed us really hard today, but the effort we have put in, to be in a spot to keep working towards the end of the season and ultimately get a win at home is awesome for us today."

For the match, DelGiudice finished with three saves while the Blue Streaks outshot the Pioneers 11-6.

Coming up next for John Carroll is their final home match of the season, with Heidelberg making the trip to University Heights on Wednesday, October 27 for a 7 pm kickoff.
