JCU Claims Share of OAC-Regular Season Title Defeating Wilmington on Senior Night

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio - It was senior night for 19 members of the John Carroll men's soccer program at Don Shula Stadium for an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) regular season finale.

The Blue Streaks clinched their fourth straight OAC regular season championship and will be the number one seed in the upcoming conference tournament winning the tiebreaker, as co-champ Otterbein will be the two seed.

Will Turrittin had the first true opportunity with a free kick in the 13th minute which resulted in a shot for Hayden Haffner, but Felix Maurer of Wilmington made his first save.

The Blue and Gold scored first, as a great set of passes led to James Hoover on the far side of the pitch sending a low pass towards the net. Benjamin Hyrszko made a sliding attempt and got the ball past Maurer for a 1-0 Blue Streak lead.

In the 29th minute, Wilmington looked to answer with a shot on goal by Elorm Dogbey but his header from a set piece hit the crossbar and went over the net. Moments later Izac Coleman sent a shot on net and Maurer answered and held strong.

At the intermission John Carroll led 1-0 tallying nine shots, five of which were on goal, compared to five by Wilmington.

With 18 minutes remaining, Elum Dogbey of Wilmington was assessed a double yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct and the Fightin' Quakers were forced to play with a man down the rest of the game.

The Fightin' Quakers would not go away despite being down a man, as both squads traded great opportunities. However Maurer and Connor Robinson both held their ground and stopped the chances. The Blue Streaks and Fightin' Quakers traded shots on goal, but both goalkeepers were able to make the saves.

With slightly over a minute remaining, James Hoover found space after forcing a turnover and sent a missile to the back of the net to seal the 2-0 victory. The Blue Streaks would finish outshooting Wilmington 14-6, and 7-1 in shots on goal.

John Carroll will host the semifinals of the OAC Tournament at Don Shula Stadium on Thursday, November 4 against an opponent to be determined after the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
