Jackson Sartain's Historic Day Guides Men's Basketball to Victory

HAMBURG, N.Y. -- "How does he do it?"

Amongst the fans at the Hillbert College Classic, one asked "How does he do it?" Folks across the country are asking this question about Jackson Sartain after his incredible effort on Friday evening.

In tonight's resounding 109-96 victory for John Carroll University Men's Basketball over Keuka College in the first round of the Hilbert College Classic, the fifth-year "Super Senior" from Medina broke three school records in game one of his final season as a Blue Streak.

Sartain set the single-game program record for points in a game (55), field goals made in a game (19) and 3-pointers made in a game (15). It was a night for the ages for Sartain.

"Coach Bones, our offensive coordinator, had a feeling Jackson would have an excellent night," said Head Coach Pete Moran '08. "Jackson is a special talent and deserves every headline. I'm not sure I will ever coach another individual who works as hard as he does."

The night started out fast for the Blue Streaks, as John Carroll jumped out to a quick 10-3 lead, which they would never relinquish from that moment onward.

The Wolves cut it as close as 48-44 late in the first half, but couldn't get much closer than that. The Blue Streaks enjoyed a 65-52 lead at halftime.

Chase Toppin and Sartain consistently knocked down momentum-halting buckets to keep the tide in John Carroll's direction.

Keuka managed to slim the deficit to nine at 83-74 just past the midway mark of the second half, but a couple quick Connor O'Toole free throws put the margin back into double digits. With 5:22 remaining, John Carroll eclipsed the century mark, courtesy of a Toppin jumper.

The records Sartain broke tonight were impressive ones. His 55 points shattered the single game points record, which had stood for 59 years. Ray Maria's 45 points vs. Allegheny on February 20, 1962 was the previous mark that stood for a long while.

Sartain shot 19-of-30 overall from the field, besting the previous program mark for field goals made in a game. The Medina native hit an amazing 15-of-24 shots from behind the arc, easily bettering the previous mark.

In a word, Sartain's statline was immaculate. To set three single-game records in an evening, particularly Ray Maria's 59-year old record for points in a game, is just incredible.

Sartain wasn't the only Blue Streak with a monster performance tonight, too. Chase Toppin put up 23 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 assists in his first game as a Blue Streak. Eric Hanna was the third JCU member to score in double figures with 13 points. Other notable contributors include Connor O'Toole with 6 points, and Mason Trubisky with 5.

For the Wolves, their leading scorers were Kobe Schriver and Jahmr Jordan adding 14 and 13 points respectively, Mason VanDeMortel scoring 11, Daniel Obunse and Jorden Lewis adding 8. The Wolves, despite scoring 96 points in tonight's losing effort, shot only 39.5% from the field and 29.8% from deep. Keuka's strongest point tonight was from the charity stripe, shooting 14-of-17, getting to the free throw line early and often.

In contrast, the Blue Streaks shot 42% from the field and a scorching 44% from behind the arc, with 15 of the 20 made triples coming from the man of the evening Jackson Sartain. The Blue Streaks won the rebounding battle 61-51, forced 19 Keuka turnovers to their 16, and outscored the Wolves in second chance points, 24-15. Keuka outmuscled the Blue Streaks scoring 30 points in the paint, and their bench played a vital role, scoring 47 of their 96 points tonight.

Both halves this evening were a track meet with each team racing up and down the floor and making shots in short bursts. There were moments where no one scored for two minutes, and then there was a 15-point explosion on both sides in less than a minute. The final score reflects the track meet that tonight's contest was.

"We are excited to get the win," said Moran. "Playing against that style is extremely difficult not only physical but mentally as well."

Looking ahead, tomorrow the Blue Streaks compete in the championship of this 4-team tournament against Hilbert College, while Keuka will compete in the consolation championship.
