Football Falls Short in Overtime at Heidelberg

TIFFIN, Ohio -- Team 99 has experienced its fair share of heartbreak this season.

John Carroll University Football fell just short against top 25 teams Mount Union and Washington & Jefferson earlier in the season in close contests. And then on Saturday, Heidelberg defeated the Blue Streaks to erase any playoff hopes for JCU.

In a thrilling overtime game, the Student Princes bested John Carroll 27-21, on Senior Day in Tiffin.

The Blue Streaks came within inches of scoring a touchdown on the ground in overtime on a fourth and goal from the 2-yard line. Just one play later, Heidelberg's Drew Sims lofted a 25-yard touchdown on a fade route to Brandon Reed, sending the Hoernemann Stadium faithful home with a victory.

The game was evenly played throughout, as neither team led by more than a possession all day. Heidelberg opened the scoring at 5:23 of the first quarter, as Montavious Yearby found the end zone on a 10-yard touchdown run.

The Blue Streaks did respond, though not until midway through the second quarter. With 7:37 left in the stanza, Jake Floriea found Keyshawn Colmon for a 30-yard beauty. The extra point was missed, leaving JCU trailing, 7-6.

Yearby struck again soon afterwards, as Heidelberg answered quickly. Heidelberg needed just 1:27 to score again, with Yearby dashing into the end zone from 27 yards out.

John Carroll marched down the field then in what would be the final JCU drive of the half. An 11-play, 65-yard drive concluded in success, as Mason Sullivan dashed in from four yards out for his first career collegiate touchdown. The extra point sailed through this time, setting the score at 14-13 Heidelberg at halftime.

Out of the break, JCU's offense couldn't gain traction on the opening drive, so Heidelberg got to work. The Student Princes needed just five plays to journey 82 yards, as Sims hit a 13-yard strike to Maceo Matthews for the score. Heidelberg led, 21-13, with 9:20 left in the third.

John Carroll's offense sensed the need to get the points back, and did. Evan McVay hauled in a 15-yard touchdown strike from Floriea at the end of a 6-play, 87-yard drive. A successful 2-point conversion by Devin Limerick evened the game at 21.

Neither John Carroll nor Heidelberg managed to score in the final 20:47 of regulation, but it was not without intrigue. Heidelberg did miss a 47-yard field goal as time expired in regulation, sending the game into overtime.

John Carroll's opening OT drive ended just inches short of paydirt, and Heidelberg scored on the first play of extra time to end things.

Looking at the overall stats, JCU enjoyed a narrow margin in total offense, 434-410. Floriea completed 24-of-32 for 254 yards and 2 touchdown, adding 65 yards on the ground. McVay played the role of bellcow, toting the rock 24 times for 100 yards, also catching 7 catches for 78 yards and a touchdown. Brennan Fugh topped the team in receiving with 90 yards off 7 receptions.

Defensively, Nate Leopold topped the team with 9 tackles. Bricker Thiel enjoyed another marvelous day with 7 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, and 1 sack. Nick Costanzo played quite well, recording 7 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and 1 sack. Tyshawn Jones and Daniel Garcar each tabbed 6 tackles.

The Blue Streaks will conclude the season next Saturday, heading to Berea for the Cuyahoga Gold Bowl against Baldwin Wallace.
