Men's Basketball Stumbles to Capital, but Sartain Surpasses 1,500 Points

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Despite a tough 85-67 loss against Capital University, John Carroll's Jackson Sartain continued his memorable career as he captured his 1,500th career point during the first half.

"It means a lot scoring that many points," said Sartain after the game. "It is quite an accomplishment, and I just want to thank all of my teammates, coaches and my parents who helped me over the years to prepare for this moment. It is a lot of points, but wins are more important, I would say. Just coming back after this loss and getting more wins as well as moving through the conference one game at a time is our goal at this time."

Despite missing two star centers, the John Carroll University Men's Basketball gave their best effort on Friday night while facing off against a strong Capital University in an Ohio Athletic Conference contest.

John Carroll and Capital exchanged points back and forth at the beginning of the first half, resulting in an 8-8 game in the first five minutes. It wasn't long until Capital's offense electrified.

The Blue Streaks held their only lead in the first half when they went up 10-8, courtesy of a layup from Chase Toppin

After taking a small lead, Capital scored 13 unanswered points due to their sharpshooting resulting in the Comets leading the Blue & Gold, 21-10. Capital did not surrender their lead to John Carroll for the rest of the game as they dominated on the court for the rest of the half.

Going into the locker room, the Comets held a substantial 43-27 lead over the Blue Streaks. Capital outshot the Blue Streaks 43.2% to 28.6% from the field in the first half.

Coming out of halftime, Capital's offense remained consistent and hot.

John Carroll tried to make a comeback, as they scored two back-to-back baskets courtesy of Griffin Hanna and Eric Hanna, cutting Capital's lead to 57-43.

Once again, John Carroll tried to mount some potent offense with less than nine minutes left. Toppin nailed a shot from outside the arc, cutting the score to 74-61.

Unfortunately for John Carroll, Capital's consistency remained unmatched for the rest of the contest, resulting in the victory for the Comets.

Sartain led the game in points for John Carroll with 14, followed by Toppin with 13 and PJ Flannery with 10. Flannery also led the Blue Streaks in boards with eight. Connor O'Toole contributed four boards on the night as well.

With the loss, John Carroll's record falls to 5-3, 1-2 in the OAC. John Carroll will look to break their two-game losing streak as they take on Marietta College on Saturday, Dec. 18, at 4 p.m.
