Men's Basketball Gets Off the Schneid With Win over Bryn Athyn

HUNTINGTON, Pa. -- On the second day of the Doc Greene Tournament at Juniata College, John Carroll Men's Basketball took on the Lions of Bryn Athyn in the consolation game. On a 3-game losing streak, the Blue Streaks were looking to have a bounceback game in their final non-conference game of the year, and they got one in a big way against the 1-9 Lions.

Jackson Sartain (34 points, 14 rebounds) made 10 3-pointers and paved the way for a 23-point Blue and Gold winner, 99-76.

The first half of this contest was all Blue Streaks to say the least. John Carroll and Bryn Athyn played it close for a while, seeing several lead changes, with the Lions taking their last lead of the half at 14-13. After that, the Blue Streaks exploded for a 12-0 run to go up 11 at 25-14.

Jackson Sartain was the catalyst for the Blue & Gold, making six 3-pointers in the first half and shooting 7-of-14 from the field. Eric Hanna also poured in 15 in the first half, marking stellar performances for both in the first 20 minutes.

Some bench players also played quality minutes, with Omar Abuhamdeh drilling a triple, Jared Bublinec taking a hard charge, and Blake Booker playing stellar defense and nabbing an assist. The Lions fought hard, however, forcing 6 turnovers and scoring buckets off every turnover.

JCU went up by as much as 21 late in the first, but ultimately ran back to the locker room holding an 18-point lead over the Lions. The Blue Streaks shot 45% from the field in the first period, and held the Lions to only 33% shooting, which propelled them to the big first half lead.

The second half was closer, but the Blue Streaks took care of business. Eric Hanna started fast in the second, scoring 7 points early to put the Blue Streaks up by over 20 points, a figure that would be sustained for the rest of the half.

The Lions committed 6 turnovers early on, making a comeback very difficult. Sartain once again lit it up from behind the arc, converting on four more shots from deep and finishing the game 10-of-20 from three. PJ Flannery also made a couple threes in the second half, and the Blue Streaks went up by as much as 31.

However, the Lions weren't going to quit. Jamal Cannady Jr. took on most of the scoring for Bryn Athyn, going 17-of-24 from the free throw line and ending with a team-high 30 points. The Lions also made 4 threes in the final period, helping keep themselves within 25 at times.

Connor O'Toole did a great job distributing the ball today, notching 9 assists to go along with 9 rebounds. Sartain also grabbed a tea- high 14 rebounds today, proving that the fifth year senior can do it all for the Blue & Gold.

The Blue Streaks and Lions played back and forth in a much more competitive way in the later stages of the second half, where Jamal Cannady took the bulk of his free throws, and the Blue Streaks pulled off a 23-point win over the lions, 99-76, improving to 6-4 on the season.

Several players stuffed the stat sheet for the Blue Streaks this afternoon. Jackson Sartain was the leading scorer and rebounder between both teams, notching a double-double with 34 points and 14 rebounds. He earned a spot on the All-Tournament team. Eric Hanna chipped in 22 points along with 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Connor O'Toole only had 5 points, but grabbed 9 rebounds and dished out 9 assists to his teammates. David Gentry had a modest 9-point, 7-rebound contest, adding a block in, affecting shots around the rim all day.

Jamal Cannady Jr. was the star of the afternoon for the Lions, dropping a team-high 30 points. Jaryn McCann was a jack of all trades, scoring 10 points, grabbing 8 boards, and netting 3 assists. The Lions did not shoot well, making only 35.5% of their field goals and 25% of their threes.

Looking ahead, the Blue Streaks will head to Tiffin next Wednesday to take on the Student Princes of Heidelberg.
