Men's Basketball Musters 17 3-Pointers, But Muskingum One-Ups JCU

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- It is not an everyday occurrence that you see two collegiate basketball teams come into an arena and each post over 100 points. Despite John Carroll University's sharp shooting from the field, the Blue Streaks suffered a 109-103 loss against Muskingum University on Friday, Feb. 19.

"I'm really proud of the way our guys played tonight," noted Head Coach Pete Moran. "We have dealt with a lot of adversity due to COVID-19, but our guys have worked very hard as a team. Our veterans such as Jackson Sartain and Luke Hippler have all done well despite the fact that we have been handcuffed due to lack of practice time."

Both teams came out shooting burning hot from outside the arc. The first five baskets of the game came from beyond the arc resulting in a Muskingum 9-6 lead over JCU at the 17:13 mark of the first half.

John Carroll took its first lead of the game after a three-point jumper from PJ Flannery with 6:31 minutes remaining in the first half. Needless to say, the lead did not last long for the Blue Streaks and it would be one of the only few times they held an advantage over the Muskies.

Muskingum's 61.1% shooting from the field and 60% (9-15) shooting from three-point range guided them to a 55-50 lead at the halfway mark of the game. Muskingum held the lead for 17:38 minutes of the first twenty minutes.

John Carroll followed closely behind Muskingum in the first half shooting 46.2% from the field and 40.9% from beyond the three-point perimeter. The offense was fueled by Eric Hanna putting up 16 points in the first half, 12 of which came from beyond the arc. Luke Hippler led the team in boards for the first half with four.

John Carroll's shooting improved immensely in the second half of the game, but it still was not enough for them to come out on top. John Carroll shot 51.3% from the arc but Muskingum maintained the edge shooting 55.2%.

Moments into the second half, Jackson Sartain found Hippler who was able to soar through the air reaching the net resulting in the only dunk of the game. At this point, JCU trailed 59-55.

After two back-to-back three-pointers from PJ Flannery, Sartain netted a basket giving the Blue Streaks their second lead of the game. John Carroll held a 65-64 advantage at the 15:44 mark.

John Carroll stayed battling neck and neck with Hanna hitting a three at the 11:16 point in the second half for the Blue Streaks to lead 76-73. After that, Muskingum started to pull away after hitting three back-to-back three-pointers. Muskingum later went on a 12-0 scoring streak.

In the final moments of the fourth quarter, John Carroll put up a powerful fight. From the 2:54 mark of the second half till the end of the game the Blue Streaks knocked down 17 points.

The comeback was unsuccessful and the Muskies held on to win the game, 109-103.

"You have to tip your hat to Muskingum, said Pete Moran. "They shot the ball very well tonight."

John Carroll's offense was steered by veteran Sartain compiling 27 points and six assists.

"Excellence is an expectation now from Jackson since he has been around the program for several seasons," said Moran. "He does amazing things every night and that's why we trust him with the basketball."

Another offensive leader for John Carroll was Hanna with 19 points. Hippler led the team in boards with seven on the night.

With the loss, John Carroll moves 1-3 and Muskingum pushes their record to 4-5.

"We're just happy to be playing right now," exclaimed Moran.  "it doesn't matter who we play, we are just happy to be playing every chance we get."

John Carroll will have a chance at getting redemption against the Muskies on the road in New Concord tomorrow night with tipoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
