Sartain's Shooting and Tough Defense Clinch Home Win for Men's Basketball

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- On Friday night, the John Carroll University Men's Basketball team learned that all good things take time. After three consecutive canceled games for the Blue and Gold, they clinched their first victory of the season in a 69-66 thriller against Ohio Athletic Conference and crosstown rival Baldwin Wallace University.

One of the biggest contributing factors to the victory was senior Jackson Sartain. The sharpshooter tallied 19 points, including four 3-point baskets. He had a 66.7 shooting percentage from outside the arc in tonight's victory.

"He will have good nights and nights where he is closely guarded," said Head Coach Pete Moran. "He stepped up tonight and the guys were able to find him. He knows every night he is guarded very tightly. We challenged him to be more physical in getting the ball. If he is open, we want to give him the ball."

The first half kicked off in a back in forth fashion with the teams exchanging the lead 13 times throughout the whole game. At the 10:04 mark in the first half, the Blue Streaks and Yellow Jackets were all tied up at 18, courtesy of Jackson Sartain's second 3-pointer of the night.

John Carroll's offense started to pull away after a 2-point jumper from Sartain with 7:53 remaining in the first half. JCU went on a 9-0 scoring streak, pushing time down on the clock to 3:14 in the first half. The Yellow Jackets eventually put out John Carroll's offensive fire with a 3-point basket via Jake Snyder.

John Carroll was guided by their 38.5% shooting from the field in the first half.

The theme of a back and forth ball game continued throughout the second half of play. At the 14:25 mark of the game, Baldwin Wallace took a lead over the Blue Streaks for the first time since before halftime. John Carroll took control of the game once again, courtesy of a 2-point shot from Emmett Chambers, putting the Blue Streaks up, 57-56.

In the dwindling moments of the game, Luke Hipler's free throw tied up JCU and BW 61-61. John Carroll went on a 7-0 scoring run pushing them to a 68-61 lead. This scoring run limited Baldwin Wallace to having 1:04 to mount a comeback.

The Yellow Jackets tightened the score, giving the Blue Streaks a potential scare, but the hosts held on to come away with a 3-point victory.

JCU was led by Sartain with 19 points, followed by Hipler with 15. Hanna also added 10 points the score. Hanna and Hugh Brown both put up 7 rebounds.

"We will go one day at a time", noted Moran. "Our hope is to be playing our best basketball in three weeks when the OAC tournament starts."

JCU improves to 1-1 after the victory. John Carroll will be back in action again tomorrow night on the road in Berea, Ohio to look for the sweep over Baldwin Wallace.
