Women's Soccer Celebrates Senior Day with Victory over Muskies

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- John Carroll University Women's Soccer earned a win in their first game of the season.

The Blue Streaks had a 1-0 victory for the start of their 2021 season over the Muskingum University Fightin' Muskies at Don Shula Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Making it all the more sweeter was Senior Day, as the Blue Streaks celebrated Claudia Lenhart, Casey Lindstrom, and Sydney Scello in a special pre-match ceremony.

"Celebrating our seniors is always a special moment, and it was for these three, too. They've been a large part of program, hard workers and leaders on and off the field," said Head Coach Michael Marich. "We are where we are because of their work the last few years."

Both teams came out strong to start the first half with big defensive plays on both ends.

John Carroll kept applying pressure throughout the entirety of the first half, but Muskingum kept putting up a fight.

By the end of the first half, neither team could find the net. At halftime, the score remained 0-0.

In the second half, it didn't take long for JCU to break through. The energy was turned up, and it didn't take too much time for the Blue Streaks to take that advantage.

Scoring the only goal of the game, Brittany Dufalla put it in the net with only five minutes into the second half.

"She had a couple of close chances in the first half," Marich said. "It was great that she was able to finally break through. She hit a post, so it was bound to happen. We came out high pressing the second half and pinned Muskingum back. She picked up the ball on the wing, drove the defender, and put it behind the keeper back post, which was great. It was well-deserved, she was phenomenal today."

After that score, the Blue Streaks were fired up, and Muskingum attempted to change the pace of the game.

But the Blue Streaks were on fire, and as the clock kept ticking, Muskingum's chances to score dwindled.

The goal by Brittany Dufalla would be the only one of the game, and John Carroll defeated Muskingum by a final score of 1-0.

"It was great to be back on the field," Marich said. "It's been a long road since our last game. Opening up at home on a sunny day with fans, and honoring our seniors was a great way to start season and conference play. It was a great moment. Normalcy was back in our lives, which was nice. We look forward to what is to come the rest of the year."

Next up, JCU Women's Soccer will face the University of Mount Union on March 18 at home at Shula Stadium with a 7 p.m. start.
