Stars Shine as Blue Streaks Sweep Capital in Walk-Off Fashion

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- After a quick start, the Blue Streaks' bats went silent for a few innings before they picked it back up. The routed Capital 13-0 in game one and walked off the Crusaders in game two, 3-2.

The Blue Streaks swept the doubleheader from Schweickert Field in University Heights, Ohio.

John Carroll is now 5-1 on the year with the wins.

Game 1

Starting on the mound was junior Mitch Midea, the Blue Streaks' ace. He got off to a dominant start, getting out of the top of the first by only allowing one walk and striking out one.

Getting the start on the mound for Capital was their ace, Scott Gutstein. Leading off in the bottom of the first for John Carroll, Sam Heaton registered a single to center. Heaton then stole second base and advanced to third on a throwing error before Joe Olsavsky grounded out to second, bringing home Heaton. After a groundout by Henry Haracz and a Justin Hanley single, Matthew Thiel delivered an RBI single, bringing in Hanley to make the score 2-0 in the Blue Streaks' favor.

Then, the teams entered a bit of a pitchers' duel as Midea continued his dominance, only allowing four base runners the rest of the way. The Crusaders overall could not get much going on offense against Midea on the afternoon. For Capital, Gutstein cruised from the bottom of the second through the bottom fourth inning, striking out four over that span.

The game turned rapidly into a blowout however, as the Blue Streaks capitalized on a 6-run scoring barrage in the fifth inning. Victor Glaser led off the frame with a single to left. After Bennett Cavaretta flied out to right for the first out of the inning, Jared Orwell singled to put two runners on for Heaton. Heaton, known for his great on-base ability, displayed his power, blasting his first home run of the season, taking the Blue Streaks' lead to 5-0. That was just the beginning of the scoring, as Olsavsky singled and Haracz doubled to get runners back on base for John Carroll. Hanley came up and singled down the left-field line, driving in both runners. After a Thiel single, his third of the day, Matthew Springer singled, driving in Hanley and capping off the Blue Streaks' scoring for the inning, stretching their lead to 8-0.

Midea came back out to start the 6th, notching two groundouts and a strikeout to get the Blue Streaks back onto offense. To start off the 6th, Capital replaced Gutstein with freshman Connor Jones. After Jones retired Orwell via flyout, Heaton totaled his second home run of the day, blasting the pitch to almost the exact spot as his earlier one. The home run was again just the beginning of the scoring, as Olsavsky hit another single and Haracz doubled, putting two runners in scoring position for Hanley. Hanley barreled a pitch up and drove it to deep left center, delivering his second home run of the season and making the score 12-0. After the second home run of the inning, Thiel walked and Glaser singled, putting two runners on base for Bennett Caveretta, who delivered an RBI single. This would cap the Blue Streaks' scoring for the game, giving them the lead at 13-0.

Maxwell Schumaker came in on relief for Midea to begin the 7th inning. Schumacher made quick work of the Crusaders, striking out two batters while only allowing one hit. Due to a new COVID rule initiated in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) this season, the game is ruled over if the run differential is greater than 10 runs after 7 innings of play (or seven innings of at-bats for the away team if the home team leads), so the Blue Streaks emerged victorious in the shortened game.

Midea said after the game that he is "just doing what he can to help the team win and let us reach our end goal." Midea finished the day with 9 strikeouts and zero earned runs on 2 hits and 2 walks across 6 innings, earning his first win of the season (1-0).

Game 2

Getting the nod in game two for the Blue Streaks was Andrew Steele, who was making his first start of the season after coming on in relief last Saturday in the opening day victory over Baldwin Wallace.

Steele started off hot by striking out the first Crusader he faced in the top of the first inning, and that was a sign of more to come from Steele. After walking Aiden Kisner, Steele got Chase Clouser to ground into a fielder's choice before striking out Brandon Barnette to retire the side.

After John Carroll was not able to get anything going in their half of the first inning against Capital starting pitcher Tucker Craft, Steele struck out another Crusader en route to a three-up, three-down inning in the top of the second.

In the bottom of the second, the Blue Streaks' Benjamin Surman flew out to start the inning. Brady Fields singled before Michael Anderson popped out for the second out. Logan LaMere was able to get his first hit of the contest, and he and Fields advanced to second and third base respectively on a throwing error. With two outs and runners in scoring position, this offered the first scoring threat of the game for John Carroll's Erik Daugenti. Daugenti made solid contact but flew out directly to center field, ending the scoring opportunity for the Streaks.

Steele got the first batter to fly out in the top of the third before allowing a single to Garrott Kennedy. Steele buckled down to finish off the inning, striking out both Callaghan and Kisner.

The Blue Streaks were finally able to manufacture a run in the bottom of the third. Sam Heaton led off with a walk, battling back from down 0-2 in the count. Jared Orwell laid a sacrifice bunt down the third base line, advancing Heaton to second, and Haracz grounded out to short, advancing Heaton to third. Justin Hanley came through with two outs, singling home Heaton on a liner to right-center. This gave the Blue Streaks the first run of the contest, putting them ahead 1-0.

From the top of the fourth through the bottom of the sixth, both pitchers dueled it out, matching each other pitch for pitch as neither allowed any runs.

The Blue Streaks entered the top of the seventh with Steele humming along and sporting a 1-0 lead. However, Clouser led off the inning with a double, and Barnette followed with a sacrifice bunt to move Clouser over to third. Steele then went on to walk the next two batters, CJ Rockwell and Connor Feeney. With the bases loaded and Steele working himself into a jam, Manager Bobby Bell turned to the bullpen, bringing in Henry Darrow. Darrow hit the first batter he faced, Ryan Henne, tying the game at 1-1. That was all the scoring Capital would manage in the inning though as Darrow struck out both Brendan Stinson and Kennedy to end the threat.

With the score tied, Bell turned to Tyler Cyrus to pinch hit to lead off the bottom of the seventh. Cyrus managed to single up the middle, bringing up the top of the order. Craft managed to lock the Streaks down, getting both Heaton and Orwell to ground out before striking out Haracz.

Darrow returned for the 8th, striking out two batters and getting a third to fly out to right. The Crusaders switched pitchers to lefty Jared Heidecker, who retired all three John Carroll batters in the bottom half of the frame.

With the game tied entering the ninth inning, Darrow trotted back onto the mound looking to hold the score in hopes of receiving some offensive help in the bottom part of the inning. Things did not go as planned however, as Darrow allowed two singles to begin the inning. Bell pulled Darrow for Samuel Basso, who allowed a single to the first batter he faced, loading the bases, before getting Henne to succumb to the infield fly rule. Basso struck out pinch hitter Dakota DesteFano for the second out of the inning. With the bases still loaded and two outs, Kennedy hit a well-placed RBI single, giving Capital their first lead of the day with a score of 2-1. Basso settled back down, retiring Callaghan and ending the inning.

Entering the bottom of the ninth down a run, Anderson singled and Logan LaMere walked to lead off the Blue Streaks' rally. Joe Olsavsky pinch hit, and reached on a fielder's choice with LaMere getting out at second for the first out of the inning. With a base open, Capital chose to intentionally walk Heaton, loading the bases for Orwell. Orwell responded with a sacrifice fly to center, bringing home Anderson and tying the game, bringing up number three hitter Haracz. Haracz blasted a ground ball to the shortstops right, and hustled to first base before the throw could get there, driving in Olsavsky and getting the Blue Streaks their second victory of the day with a 3-2 final score.

Basso ended up earning the victory, improving to 1-0 on the season. Steele finished with 9 strikeouts over 6 and a third innings, retiring 19 of the total 24 batters he faced.

With the two wins, John Carroll improved to 5-1 (2-0 OAC) on the season. Capital falls to 0-6 (0-6 OAC). The two teams face each other again in a doubleheader tomorrow in Bexley, Ohio, with the first game starting at 1 p.m.
