Men's Soccer Upends Polar Bears on Windy Day in Ada

ADA, Ohio -- Despite Mother Nature's punishing weather, the John Carroll University Men's Soccer team earned a victory on the road on Sunday.

The Blue Streaks defeated Ohio Northern University, 2-1, in a road contest at Ada. The game took two overtimes and 107:37 of playing time to settle, but in the end, Jared Mattei provided game-winning heroics and gave JCU a thrilling road win.

With the victory, the Blue Streaks remain undefeated at 4-0 on the 2021 campaign.

The Blue Streaks had some nice early possessions, resulting in a pair of shots, one a shot on goal by freshman Danny Kalic. Shortly after a corner kick, Benjamin Hryszko hit a shot wide in the eighth minute. Ohio Northern received a yellow card in the 10th minute as JCU pushed the pressure.

After three corner kicks, Hryszko broke through in the 24th minute with a nice goal. The Blue Streaks took a 1-0 lead with Hryszko's second goal of the season. Ohio Northern and John Carroll then traded jabs, with Connor Robinson making a save. Not long after obtaining a yellow card, the Polar Bears found the back of the net in the 43rd minute.

Cade Winchester did the honors for ONU, off an assist by Ryan Augustine. The goal right before the end of the half set the score at 1-1 heading into the break.

Ohio Northern fired a shot wide in the 58th minute, but the start of the second half was quiet otherwise. Hryszko had corner kicks in the 72nd and 74th minutes, but the Polar Bears emerged unscathed. Hryszko had a shot blocked, and a corner kick in the 77th minute by Brenden Swann did not end in a goal. A Robinson save kept the game square, and ONU thwarted an attempt by Jared Ianiro.

As a result, the game required extra time. Swann and Izac Coleman had corner kicks, but nothing came of them, so the contest required a second overtime. In the second OT, Jared Mattei played the hero. The junior scored the dramatic goal off an assist by Michael Adelman in the 108th minute of a classic contest.

The Blue Streaks will carry the flawless record into a road matchup with rival Baldwin Wallace on Thursday.
