Men's Track & Field Earns 2nd at OAC Indoor Championship Meet

| By:
WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- John Carroll's Women's track and field team battled until the end yesterday with Mount Union in the OAC Championship and came out on top. Today, the Men's squad came up just short and placed second by a mere 11 points behind the Purple Raiders with 401 total points.

The Blue Streaks started the day with a strong performance in the long jump. Deven Ward, Willis Goodwin, and James Kartsonas placed second, third, and fourth, giving the Blue Streaks the strong start they knew they needed.

Goodwin and Kartsonas also put together a great performance in the triple jump. The duo is going to be the future of the field events for this program, and they did what they had to do today as they both PR'ed in the long jump, and scored in the triple jump. Zach Szafarski would also contribute in the field events with a fifth place performance that put points on the board in the shot put.

In the track events, the Blue Streaks started with two huge victories in the Distance Medley Relay and the 5000m. A team of Sam Coe, Mark Zahren, James Mangan, and Ian Pierson won the DMR, and Alex Phillip won the 5000m. Jamie Dailey placed second, Jared Arnold placed fourth, and Andrew Miner placed fifth. In the 4x200m relay, the team placed third. The Blue Streaks would then pull off two straight wins in the mile and the 400m per Alex Phillip and Garrett Clark. Unfortunately, that would be the last individual victory for JCU.

Caleb Correia and Jake Darby would each place third in the 500m and 1000m. Bobby Foggle would also contribute in the 500m by placing fifth. Gabe Ernest would be the only athlete to score for the team in the 800m by placing sixth. Jamie Dailey would be the top Blue Streak in the 3000m in his last indoor race of his college career. Dailey had a strong performance toughing out the two longest individual events, with his second place in the 5000m and fourth place in the 3000m. The Streaks also got strong performances by freshmen Cormac Peppard-Kramer and John Shoemaker as they placed fourth and fifth respectively in the 1000m.

Deven Ward had a strong performance in his last indoor meet, as well. He placed second in the long jump and 60m dash, and third in the 200m dash. He also was a leg of the 4x400m relay team that would finish the season with a victory.

While the Blue Streaks fell just 11 points shy of victory, they placed second out of all ten OAC teams. The Blue Steaks will likely finish in the top 10 of the national indoor rankings, and have great optimism heading into the outdoor season.
