Double Plays Undo Comeback Effort in Berea for JCU Softball

BEREA, Ohio -- The sun bathed Baldwin Wallace University in sunlight on Tuesday, but the softball gods did not bless the John Carroll University Softball team with good fortune.

The Blue Streaks allowed two early runs, but threatened to come back on several occasions. Each time, double plays erased comeback hopes for JCU. Baldwin Wallace earned a 2-0 win to complete the Monday-Tuesday sweep.

The defeat sets the Blue Streaks back to 0-2 on the year.

Katie DeBord received her first start of the year on the mound, and started the contest off well. The sophomore mowed down the opposition in order with a 1-2-3 start. Crista Nativio solved BW pitcher Hannah Welling with an early walk, but was left stranded.

In the second inning, the Yellow Jackets did their damage. Jackie Kasai hit a two-run single off the third base bag for a pair of runs, and that was all Baldwin Wallace needed to earn the victory.

Gabby Hougan walked to open the bottom of the third, but a double play dashed JCU's hopes. Gracie Bressoud hit a single, but a groundout ended the frame. Kasyn Scarantine reached on an error to open the sixth, but another 4-3 double play cleared the bases. Nativio then singled and stole second, but a flyout completed the inning.

The seventh inning saw JCU's most promising opportunity. Kristen Jesberger walked to open the frame. Hannah Vicini, pinchrunning for Jesberger, advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jess Lichota walked, setting runners at first and second. Nikki Camarati then entered for Welling, and promptly walked Lauren Sienkiewicz to load the bases.

With the bases juiced and no outs, it looked like the perfect time to even things up or even walk off with a victory. But a strikeout and a lineout 4-5 doubleplay allowed the Yellow Jackets to walk away unscathed.

DeBord absorbed the loss after allowing 2 runs in 3 innings. Eagle and Danielle Orendi combined for 4 scoreless innings of relief, allowing only 2 combined hits.

Nicole Loudin's squad now looks ahead to four weekend games vs. Otterbein, with a doubleheader in Westerville on Saturday and a twinbill in University Heights on Sunday.
