Volleyball Falls to Otterbein in OAC Tournament Quarterfinal

WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- In the quarterfinal match of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament, John Carroll University Volleyball fell to the Otterbein Cardinals with a match set score of 3-0.

JCU faced a tough test in Otterbein, entering with an 0-3 record against the Cardinals in OAC postseason play and an 0-4 mark as the #7 seed. The Cardinals were every bit as good as advertised, but JCU did battle.

The Cardinals swept the three sets with scores of 17-25, 20-25, and 17-25.

Otterbein got off to a quick start in the first match, going on a short scoring run. Cassi Calamunci finally ended the Otterbein scoring spree with back-to-back kills for JCU.

Keeping their foot on the gas, the Cardinals continued their reign over the Blue Streaks as they hit the 25-point mark in the first set.

The second set consisted of a more back and forth scoring aspect, as the Blue and Gold kept up with the Cardinals. A kill by Ally Bartolone started a 4-point run for John Carroll at the end of the set, but it would not be enough to push them over Otterbein.

Otterbein started strong in the third set, as they took the lead 9-3 over the Blue Streaks. John Carroll fought their way back into the game, but the Cardinals won this one as well, giving them the three sets needed to earn the match victory.

Calamunci (12) led the Blue and Gold in kills, followed by Abigail Kirk and Bartolone with five each, and Carleen Ellerbruch who tabbed four. Bartolone added 16 assists. Cindy Woo and Lexi MacDonald contributed one service ace a piece. MacDonald topped the team with 14 digs, while Calamunci contributed nine.

With this loss, the Blue Streaks finish their spring season with a final record of 8-11.
