Women's Soccer Conquered by Capital in OAC Tournament Quarterfinal

BEXLEY, Ohio -- Entering the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament, John Carroll University Women's Soccer faced a tall task.

The Blue Streaks came into the OAC Quarterfinal as the #6 seed, confronting Capital on the road. Playing a Tuesday night road game against a talented team like the Crusaders is quite difficult, especially factoring in that Capital conquered JCU, 4-0, earlier on this season. Heading into the day, Capital owned a 6-1 record over the Blue Streaks in tournament play.

Despite a hard-fought effort, the Blue Streaks lost to Capital in the Quarterfinals, 2-0, bringing an end to the 2021 spring campaign.

Michael Marich guided the Blue Streaks to a 4-5-1 record in an abbreviated, sprint-to-the-finish 2021 campaign.

John Carroll provided some early pressure on Capital with Brittany Dufalla playing the lead, but the Crusaders mounted a ferocious attack and broke onto the scoreboard in the 14th minute.

On a Capital cornerkick, Bridget Mallin bent a high shot into top right part of the net over the outstretched arms of the keeper. Mallin's impressive goal gave Capital the early 1-0 advantage.

The hosts continued to push the Blue Streaks, enjoying plenty of possession time. Not long after a JCU goal kick and an attempted push down the field, Capital counterattacked. Casey slotted the ball to Lexi Snider around the 25-yard line close to the far sideline. After making a move, Snider forged ahead and fired a low shot from just outside the box. The shot beat the goalie to the left side, doubling the Capital lead.

The Crusaders continued to own the ball, outshooting John Carroll 19-1, and 9-0 in shots on target. Danielle DelGiudice made 7 saves in a busy first half.

In the second half, the Crusaders did not relent.

Capital continued to possess the ball, not allowing John Carroll to gain much traction. On the other hand, the Crusaders could not get much going on offense, either, though Snider hit the post with a shot in the 82nd minute. JCU didn't surrender, however.

Grace Monnin put a shot on net in the 85th minute, but Capital made a save, and Brittany Dufalla just missed a shot wide left in the 86th minute.

The Blue Streaks could not find the back of the net in the final minutes, and Capital completed the shutout to advance to the next round of the OAC Tournament. Capital outshot JCU, 23-4, including 10-1 in shots on target. Capital had 11 cornerkicks to 1 for JCU.

JCU drops to 2-7 all-time as the #6 seed and 3-7 vs. the #3 seed.

With the loss, the Blue Streaks bow out of the 2021 spring campaign with a 4-5-1 mark. Only losing a few seniors, the Blue Streaks will hope to build upon lessons learned in the fall in just four short months or so.
