Women's Lacrosse Storms Past Pioneers at Home

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- For the first time ever, John Carroll University Women's Lacrosse hosted the Marietta Pioneers, and the Blue Streaks showed their hospitality by scoring the most goals ever in the series, in a 24-3 win, at Don Shula Stadium on April 14.

In a Wednesday night showdown with visiting Marietta, the Blue Streaks cruised to a victory against the Pioneers at Don Shula Stadium on April 14.

John Carroll, ranked No. 17 in this week's D-III US Lacrosse Magazine poll, holds a perfect 13-0 record on the season. Of the 249 Division III women's lacrosse teams, no other school has more than 13 wins this season. With the win, John Carroll secured home-field advantage for the Ohio Athletic Conference semifinal.

The most impressive part of the win was the offensive attack. The Blue Streaks exceeded 15 goals in the first 24 minutes of play and now have done so in every game this season. That same mark was only accomplished 13 times during the 2018 campaign. Dating back to last year, John Carroll has eclipsed 15 goals a remarkable 20 times in a row.

It was none other than the NCAA's leading goal scorer, Colleen Grombala, who started the scoring. Grombala found the back of the net 2:06 into the game and led a charge of 10 straight goals by the Blue and Gold. Grombala had a total of seven goals on the night and has now accomplished seven goals or more in a game seven times during her JCU career.

During the opening scoring run, Kendall Gessner and Alex Heishman each scored a pair of goals. Gessner had a career-high five goals in total.

For the first half, the Blue and Gold dominated possession and scored 17 goals, tying a season high. Mary Doherty notched the back of the net twice and Shannon Burdick, Olivia Gerlach and Olivia Hanulak all added in on the first-half scoring.

Doherty dominated on both ends of the field all night long, as she tied her career-high with four goals in the game, a mark that she's hit two other times. On the defensive end, Doherty led the team with four ground balls and a career-best three caused turnovers.

JCU fired 27 shots in the first half, 22 of which came in the direction of Marietta's goalkeeper Maddie Leers.

In the second half, Gessner and Grombala scored the first two goals but Marietta answered with two goals of its own. By then, the Blue Streaks held a 13-goal lead. Over the final 12 minutes of the game, JCU tacked on five goals, including one from Claire Mezzoprete.

Gessner, Grombala, Olivia Hanulak and Heishman each had two assists in the outing. Mezzoprete had one as well.

Defensively, the Blue Streaks won the draw control battle 25-4, gathered 15 ground balls compared to Marietta's 7, and caused a game-high 19 turnovers. Along with Doherty, Heishman also caused three turnovers and Gerlach and Emma Workman each scooped up two ground balls.

The Blue Streaks will make a stop in Bexley on Saturday, April 17, to take on Capital. In one week, John Carroll host second-place Mount Union at Don Shula Stadium. The Blue Streaks have not lost a conference game at home since the Purple Raiders won 17-10 on April 10, 2019, marking seven consecutive wins at Wasmer Field.
