Baseball Tripped Up in Sunday Setback on the Road

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Despite some very solid individual efforts, John Carroll University Baseball dropped a pair of games on Sunday.

Heading south an hour on I-77, the Blue Streaks lost two to Mount Union, 6-0 in Game 1, and 8-4 in Game 2.

Game 1

The Sunday opener proved to be an pitcher's affair, a favorite for any fan of small ball baseball.

John Carroll's John Merrill matched up with Mount Union's Ryan Osman in Game 1. The two traded scoreless innings for the first three frames. Henry Haracz managed a single in the first, Matthew Springer tabbed a double in the third, and Haracz singled again in the fourth, but nothing came of the baseknocks.

Mount Union clawed its way onto the board in the fourth. Corey White got aboard with a walk, quickly stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. An RBI single to third scored the first run of the day.

The Blue Streaks threatened in the fifth with a Jared Orwell single, but couldn't score, as two groundouts killed the potential rally.

Merrill stood strong through six innings, but Mount Union finally got to him in the seventh. Joseph Smith tried to stem the tides, but the Purple Raiders' offense was determined to give Osman sufficient breathing room. And that they did, with a 5-run inning.

Osman finished things out with a strong eighth and ninth, dealing JCU a tough loss.

The Blue Streaks tabbed 6 hits but no runs. Merrill took the loss. Nicholas Michel looked good late, contributing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Game 2

The latter game of the doubleheader featured more offense from the jump.

Mount Union got on the board early, using a 2-out rally to score 2 runs. After a single and two fly outs, the hosts tabbed a single and a double to begin the scoring.

Sam Heaton singled in the first, Jack Bennett tripled in the second, and Haracz singled in the third, but the Blue Streaks couldn't get that second hit to score the runner on base.

Meanwhile, Matthew Aukerman settled in, cruising through the second, third, and fourth innings with alacrity.

Bennett walked to open the fourth and Luke Galioto reached on an error, but a double steal led to an out following a flyout. Christian Cassaro walked an advanced to second on a wild pitch, which also advanced Galioto. A walk loaded the bases, but a fielder's choice ended the inning.

The Blue Streaks got that second hit and scored in the top of the fifth. Springer started things off with a single to center, and Heaton reached on an error on an attempted sacrifice bunt. Justin Hanley drew a walk, ending the day of Mount Union's starter. Bennett drew a hit by pitch to plate a run, and Galioto scored another on a sacrifice fly. Mount Union managed to escape the jam by drawing a popout and a groundout, limiting the damage to 2 runs.

The Purple Raiders responded in kind in the bottom of the frame. The men of Alliance grabbed the lead with a home run and hit a double, but a pickoff play took the runner off the basepaths. Mount Union didn't flinch, as a walk, hit by pitch, and another walk loaded the bases. A single to center scored two, and a double to right center scored two more.

With the big fifth inning, the Purple Raiders now led, 7-2.

Mount Union added to the advantage with a double and a single in the sixth, making the score 8-2. But JCU did shave off a couple from the deficit in the seventh. Galioto singled to center, Jacob Connery walked, and Christian Cassaro singled to load the bases. A fielder's choice scored a run, and then a strikeout ended the inning, with JCU trailing, 8-4.

The score stood as the final, despite a Hanley single in the eighth.

Auckerman accepted the loss. Michel tabbed 2 more scoreless innings in relief late. Heaton and Haracz led the offense with 2 hits, while Danny Murphy recorded 2 RBI.

The Blue Streaks drop to 11-11-1 overall with the loss, 8-10-1 in OAC play.
