Dufalla's Goal 17 minutes in Ends Scoreless Streak and Secures Third Shutout Win of Season

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- One streak is over and another one has begun.

For the first time in three games, the John Carroll University Women's Soccer Team cracked the scoreboard and snapped a three-game skid. In an afternoon matchup against Baldwin Wallace on April 2, JCU took down the Yellow Jackets 1-0 at Don Shula Stadium.

The Blue and Gold improve to 3-3 on the season and 16-8-10 all-time against Baldwin Wallace. Of the 16 wins in the series history against Baldwin Wallace, 13 of them have been shutouts. John Carroll has also not lost at home to the Yellow Jackets since the 2006 season.

"I am happy for the women to get back on the winning track after playing the top of the conference," Head Coach Michael Marich said. "BW was a tough opponent. I was excited with our production and the outcome. We're looking forward to the next set of games."

John Carroll's last three opponents, Capital, Ohio Northern and Otterbein are a combined 17-0.

It was Brittany Dufalla in the 17th minute that found the back of the net from 10 yards out to break the scoreless streak and give JCU a 1-0 lead. Lauren Gumeny set up the play that directed the ball towards Sydney Scello and then onto the right foot of Dufalla for her second score of the season. Gumeny's assist marked the first point of her collegiate career. Scello was also credited with the assist, the sixth of her career.

Dufalla's goal proved pivotal for the Blue Streaks to secure the win.

Early on in the game, John Carroll applied pressure on the offensive, which earned an opportunity for a corner kick. The set-piece chance 2:20 into the game marked the first time the Blue and Gold had a try from the corner in over 132 minutes of gameplay.

For the remainder of the game, JCU fired five shots, three of which came on target. The Blue Streaks also had a corner kick try in the second half but the header from Gabriella Walter was saved by BW goalkeeper Maddie Hofmann.

John Carroll's goalkeeper Mackenzie Stease was on point all game long. The Yellow Jackets compiled eight shots in total but only three came on net. Stease deflected all three to record her third shutout of the career.

In the 88th minute, Baldwin Wallace made one last stand on a corner kick. This time around, Stease was tangled up in the crease but the JCU back line of defense kept it put of the net to hold the opposition scoreless for the third time this season.

The Blue Streaks will be off for the weekend but will then travel to Marietta on Monday, April 5, for a game against the Pioneers. The game is set to start at 7 pm. John Carroll has not lost to the Pioneers since 2006 and won last year at Don Drumm Stadium, 2-1.
