With Win in Game 1, Softball Finishes 3-for-4 in a Wilmington Weekend

WILMINGTON, Ohio -- On the heels of a great Saturday sweep, John Carroll University Softball kept rolling on Sunday.

The Blue Streaks won Game 1, 4-0, and lost Game 2, 7-3, in Wilmington.

With the 3-1 weekend, the Blue Streaks sit at 7-22 overall, 7-20 in OAC play.

Game 1

Head Coach Nicole Loudin has talked with her team about weathering early storms. The Blue Streaks did an excellent job of navigating early turbulence in the opening game on Sunday.

In the bottom of the second, JCU starter Katie DeBord found herself in a precarious position after rolling through the first. Wilmington managed to load the bases with two outs thanks to a single to left, a single to second, and a walk. The situation looked treacherous for DeBord, as Wilmington could have snatched the momentum. But DeBord garnered a clutch strikeout, escaping the jam with no damage.

Having survived the early trouble, the Blue Streaks supported DeBord with some offense. Crista Nativio began the fun with a single to left, then stealing second. Gracie Bressoud then poked a single to right, advancing to second on the throw. With two runners in scoring position, Kasyn Scarantine singled through the right side, plating Nativio. Emma Gurley then grounded out to third. On the throw, Bressoud snuck home for a key run. Kristen Jesberger then blasted a double to right center, plating Kasyn Scarantine

Wilmington switched pitchers and escaped, but the damage was done, as the Blue Streaks claimed an early 3-0 lead.

DeBord allowed a pair of strikeouts in the third, but again got past the trouble and to the next inning. After a groundout to open the frame, Lauren Sienkiewicz beat out an infield single with impressive speed. She advanced to second on a Nativio sacrifice bunt. Gracie Bressoud singled and then stole second, placing a pair of runners in scoring position. With Scarantine at the plate, an alert Sienkiewicz dashed home on a bad throw from the catcher to the pitcher. As a result, JCU held a 4-0 lead heading into the fifth.

The fifth and sixth both went by without any runs, but it was a nail-biting sixth frame for JCU. Back-to-back singles and a groundout placed runners at second and third with just one out for DeBord. But again, the Mason native bore down. DeBord got a groundout for the second out. After surrendering a walk, she sanctioned a groundout to short to end the inning, with JCU still up by four.

In the bottom of the seventh, Madison Eagle entered the circle to finish off the game. The senior secured a pair of groundouts before allowing a hit by pitch and a walk. But she finished things off, thanks to a 4-2-5-2 putout at home following an error.

DeBord accepted the win, allowing no runs on 8 hits, stranding 12 Fightin' Quakers. Bressoud led the way as the leadoff hitter with a 2-for-4 game, while Nativio also tabbed two hits. Scarantine, Gurley, and Jesberger all tabbed RBIs as JCU won its third straight game while scoring 4 runs.

Game 2

JCU's bats claimed the early lead in the final game of the weekend. Emma Gurley slotted a 2-out single to center, and Kristen Jesberger doubled to left center to bring her in. Unfortunately, the lead would not hold.

Wilmington mustered a 2-out rally of its own, beginning with a walk and roused by a double, setting two ducks on the pond. A walk and a wild pitch on ball four gave the Quakers a run. A single up the middle plated another, putting the hosts up 2-1.

Jess Lichota and Crista Nativio singled in the second, but nothing came of the opportunity. Just afterwards, a walk set a runner aboard for Hannah Suchland, who singled up the middle for an RBI and an insurance run.

Back-to-back singles threatened Danielle Orendi in the third, but the freshman managed to get out without any damage done.

Wilmington did plate two runs in the fourth. A walk, single and a double did the trick for Wilmington, pushing the score to 5-1. Nativio and Gurley tried to kickstart a response with a pair of singles, but nothing came of it in the top of the fifth.

In the sixth, JCU did author a run. Gabby Hougan walked to initiate things, and Maddie Traub singled to center. Jess Lichota blasted a double to right center to plate Hougan. That's all that come of the rally, however, so JCU went into its final 3 outs trailing, 5-2.

To be absolutely sure, the Fightin' Quakers tacked on two more runs in the sixth with a walk and three singles, upping the lead to 7-2 with three outs to get. Alexis Stringfellow finished things off after Gracie Bressoud singled, stole second, and scored on an error. In doing so, Stringfellow prevented a John Carroll weekend sweep.

Danielle Orendi took the loss. Gurley, Traub, Nativio, and Lichota all managed multi-hit games, as John Carroll tallied 10 hits, matching Wilmington.

After the 3-1 weekend, the Blue Streaks advance to 7-22 overall, 7-20 in OAC play. Two weekend series remain in the regular season.
