Marietta's Offense Overpowers Blue Streaks for Saturday Sweep

MARIETTA, Ohio -- Playing as the "home" team at Marietta on Saturday, the John Carroll University Baseball team enjoyed no better luck than on Friday.

The Pioneers swept the Saturday doubleheader, 12-5 and 11-5, to take all four games from the Blue Streaks on the weekend.

Entering the weekend as the #10 in the country, the Pioneers are a stout team and one of the top contenders in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Playing the Pios on the road is tough, but the Blue Streaks fought the good fight.

John Carroll drops to 8-7 overall and 5-5 in OAC play after this weekend. Marietta is now an OAC-best 14-1 on the campaign.

Game 1

Saturday's first contest (the third of the weekend) began on a positive note. Logan LaMere reached on a 2-out single to right field in the bottom of the second, and Bennett Cavaretta clubbed a double to right field to plate LaMere. Michael Anderson singled, but the Pioneers drew a groundout to end the inning.

Marietta responded with a monster inning in the top of the third. Back-to-back-to-back singles loaded the bases with no outs. The Pioneers took full advantage of the chance, blasting a grand slam home run to right center, snatching the lead and dealing JCU a big blow. A pair of walks and singles resulted in two more runs for the Pios in the inning, stretching the advantage to 6-1.

The offenses settled down until the bottom of the fifth. Cavaretta began the inning with a single, and Jack Bennett kept things rolling with a double to left. Following a lineout, Cavaretta scored on a Marietta balk. A flyout ended the inning with JCU trailing, 6-2.

Marietta tallied another run in the sixth with small ball, thanks to an inning-starting single, a sacrifice bunt, a steal, and a sacrifice fly. But in the bottom half of the inning, Christian Cassaro kickstarted the JCU response with a pinch-hit single. Henry Haracz singled to set runners at first and second for Joseph Olsavsky. The freshman phenom belted a 3-run homer to left field, narrowing the deficit to 7-5.

In the eighth inning, Marietta put the nail in the coffin. The Pioneers plated three runs in the eighth, advancing the lead to 10-5. Two more runs in the top of the ninth sealed the score at 12-5.

Andrew Steele absorbed the loss to drop to 2-1 on the year, while Marietta's Dalton Wiggins got the win to up his record to 4-0. Olsavsky led the way on offense for JCU with a 2-for-4 day at the dish with the 3-run home run. Cavaretta also hit 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.

Game 2

The Blue Streaks were bound and determined not to head home without a victory, but it was not meant to be, despite a strong start.

Sam Heaton knocked a 1-out double down the line in the first to open things up. Joe Olsavsky then singled to left, advancing Heaton to third. A Justin Hanley groundout scored Heaton for the first run of the contest.

In the third, John Carroll doubled its lead. Again, it was Heaton and Olsavsky doing the damage. Heaton started things off with a 2-out walk and Olsavsky doubled to right center, setting two ducks on the pond for Hanley. The junior reached on a throwing error, which scored Heaton for an unearned run. Either way, the Blue Streaks weren't complaining, as they took a 2-0 advantage into the fourth.

John Merrill stymied the Pioneers until the fifth inning. At the start of the frame, Pioneers tabbed back-to-back-to-back hits to load the bases with no outs. Merrill got a lineout for the first out of the inning but the Pioneers lifted an RBI single to left field, tying the ballgame. The Pioneers then drew back-to-back walks to snag the lead, 3-2. Henry Darrow entered and got out of the jam with a lineout.

Marietta started the sixth the same way as the fifth – with three hits in a row. This time, the Pioneers plated two with a 2-run triple with no outs, advancing the lead to 5-2. Marietta tacked on one more, extending the margin to 6-2.

JCU threatened in the seventh, reaching on a walk and an error. But Marietta induced a groundout to escape unharmed. Soon after, a pair of Marietta singles in the top of the eighth tossed in another run for the Pioneers. Marietta pushed across four more runs in the ninth to seal the deal.

Haracz and Heaton each tabbed RBI doubles, and JCU scored one more on a double play, but the late rally was not enough. Olsavsky finished 3-for-4 and Heaton went 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI at the dish. Merrill took the loss after a good start to the game.

The Blue Streaks will be back in action for 4 games vs. Baldwin Wallace next weekend, the first two in Berea and the second two in University Heights.
