Grombala Sets Program Record as Women's Lax Reaches New Peak with Win

WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- With each win comes a new record.

Through 11 games, the John Carroll University Women's Lacrosse team is having the best season in program history. When the Blue Streaks have the top goal scorer in the nation, it makes it a little easier. Except, Colleen Grombala isn't just the NCAA Division III leader in goals, she is now the all-time leader in John Carroll history.

Led by a game-high six goals by Grombala, the Blue Streaks added another win to their 2021 season total, with a 20-2 oust of Otterbein University at Memorial Stadium on April 3. With 11 wins, John Carroll has the most wins in D-III. The 11-0 start is the best in school history.

Following today's game, Grombala has 247 goals in her career, a mark that sits atop the JCU record books and second among active career leaders in Division III.

To start the game, Grombala wasted no time to reach the scoreboard with a goal 1:28 into the contest. The first goal sparked a run of three more in the first 10 minutes. Otterbein did crack the scoreboard 7:07 into the game for its only goal of the first half.

The Cardinals' goal didn't faze Grombala, as she responded by scoring three of the next six goals to give JCU a convincing 9-1 lead with 7:02 to play before the break. Fourteen seconds after Grombala's final goal of the half, Kendall Gessner found the back of the net for her first of two goals.

Through the first 30 minutes of play, John Carroll led 12-1. In the opening half of games this season, the Blue Streaks have scored a dozen goals seven times.

Early on in the second half, Jill Jarem made sure JCU kept its foot on the gas with two goals in the first nine minutes. Jarem finished with three goals, which marked the third hat trick of her career and second of the season.

With 13:08 to play, Grombala scored her final goal of the afternoon to put the Blue and Gold ahead 16-1. The Cardinals answered less than two minutes later but that was the last time they'd find the back of the net for the day.

On the defensive end, JCU garnered 15 ground balls and caused six turnovers. Lainey Donalson and Olivia Gerlach tied with a game-high three ground balls and Madelyn Veto accounted for two of the caused turnovers.

Including Grombala and Jarem, 10 players tallied goals for the Blue Streaks. Gerlach, Gessner and Carly Ross each netted a pair. The quartet has had a combined 16-multi goal games. Gerlach and Workman accompanied Alex Heishman and Jenna Ginsberg with an assist on the day. Heishman and Ginsberg both had a goal as well.

The Blue Streaks are now 6-0 all-time against Otterbein and have scored at least 20 goals against the Cardinals in each of the last four matchups. In the last four games of the 2021 campaign, 20 goals have been the floor for the JCU offensive attack.

In four days, the Blue Streaks will travel to Berea to take on the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets for the 12th game of the season, which is set to begin at George Finnie Stadium at 7 p.m. In the first meeting with BW at home, John Carroll stung the Yellow Jackets, 19-1, at Don Shula Stadium.
