Softball Surrenders Early Runs in Friday Road Loss

NEW CONCORD, Ohio -- Weather forced changes to the schedule, but Muskingum, currently standing in second in the Ohio Athletic Conference standings, showed why they're a top team in the conference.

Celebrating Senior Day, the Fighting Muskies bested John Carroll University Softball on Friday, 5-2.

A doubleheader looms on Saturday, with an opportunity for the Blue Streaks to return the favor on their Senior Day, which will be the regular season finale.

Muskingum's veterans fired up the offense in the early going, jumping on the John Carroll pitching early. Francesca Stefano clubbed a 2-run double and Riley Powers tabbed a 1-run double, both down the left field line, setting Muskingum ahead 3-0 after the first.

Two unearned runs crossed the plate in the second inning, pushing the hosts' lead to 5-0. John Carroll's bats came alive in response in the top of the third. Lauren Sienkiewicz walked to open the inning, and she advanced to third on a Gracie Bressoud doubled to the gap in left. Kasyn Scarantine reached on a fielder's choice, attaining an RBI by scoring Sienkiewicz. A Muskingum error then scored Bressoud, narrowing the deficit to 5-2.

Danielle Orendi entered in the bottom of the frame, and shut down Muskingum. The Pittsburgher pitched 4 innings of scoreless relief, not allowing a hit and surrendering just one walk.

But the Blue Streaks' bats could not summon a response, despite a hit in the fifth and sixth innings. So, the Blue and Gold dropped to 9-25 overall, 9-23 in OAC play.

Katie DeBord drew the loss, dropping to 6-14. Jess Lichota led the offense with a 2-for-3 day at the dish. Crista Nativio and Bressoud also notched hits, but Hannah Duff hurled a nice complete game win for the Fighting Muskies.

John Carroll will host Muskingum for a doubleheader starting at 1 pm, with Senior Day festivities opening up the day with a celebration of Madison Eagle, Hannah Vicini, and Sydney Hall
