Women's Soccer Drops Season Opener to Westminster on the Road

NEW WILMINGTON, Ohio -- In the opening game of 2021, John Carroll University Women's Soccer tasted defeat.

In a road matchup, the Blue Streaks suffered a 3-0 loss to Westminster College.

The Blue Streaks enjoyed some chances, but the Titans scored the first goal of the contest in the opening frame and added two more late to best John Carroll in the first game of the fall.

The first 27 minutes proved to be quiet, as neither team managed a shot on goal. Westminster got the first shot on goal of the contest in the 28th minute, and Danielle DelGiudice stepped up with the save. But just a minute later, the Titans got on the board.

In the 29th minute, Brooke Horvath slotted it in the high left portion of the net on the first goal of the year for the Titans.

The opening salvo set the score at 1-0, which stood for the remainder of the half. DelGiudice made a save in the 32nd minute to do her part.

John Carroll did tab shots by Grace Monnin in the 35th minute and Gianna Merlo in the 39th minute, but Westminster turned them away.

The Blue Streaks and Titans exchanged shots in the second stanza, but not many shots early. DelGiudice steered away chances in the 55th and 73rd, holding the margin at one entering the final stretch of the contest.

But in the final eight minutes of the game, Westminster provided the final nails in the coffin. Allie Augustine fired in a goal in the 83rd minute, doubling the margin. Augustine then assisted on Horvath on her second goal of the game in the 88th minute.

The late tallies set the final margin at 3-0. Westminster finished ahead of JCU in shots, 16-8, and shots on goal, 10-3.

John Carroll will now ready up for a 2-game weekend, facing Earlham on Saturday and Franklin on Sunday, both on the road.
