Women's Soccer Upended in OT Thriller at Kenyon

GAMBIER, Ohio -- A road-heavy early season schedule continued for John Carroll University Women's Soccer on Wednesday. The road has been mostly kind to the Blue Streaks this fall, but not this time.

In an intense non-conference matchup with Kenyon College Ladies, the Blue Streaks fell just short.

The Ladies upended the Blue Streaks in overtime, 1-0.

With the defeat, John Carroll's 4-game winning streak came to a close, as did a 3-game road win streak.

The Blue Streaks came out of the gate swinging on offense. Juliana Kontul and Brittany Dufalla each tallied an early shot, but Kenyon had an answer for both. In the 11th minute, the Ladies responded with an offensive flurry of their own. Danielle DelGiudice provided two saves and a Kenyon corner did not connect.

Near the midpoint of the half, the Ladies ramped up the attack again. DelGiudice made a save in the 27th minute to keep the hosts off the board.

The rest of the opening period elapsed without a shot, though Kenyon did have a couple corners. The score remained even at the break.

The Blue Streaks came out firing again at the start of the second, with a shot on goal by Dufalla in the 49th minute. Following an unsuccessful JCU corner, it was Kenyon's turn to apply the pressure. The Ladies managed shots on goal in the 52nd and the 53rd minutes, but DelGiudice again provided answers.

Kenyon again fired a shot at the net in the 60th minute, but DelGiudice remained strong. The JCU offense responded with a chance of its own, with Lauren Gumeny tabbing a shot on goal in the 62nd minute.

The next 12 minutes of the game elapsed without a shot, until Kenyon tested DelGiudice in the 75th minute. Dufalla then garnered a shot on net in the 79th minute, both ended without a goal.

Each squad earned a shot on goal in the final minutes of regulation, John Carroll's by Kennedy Newhart. But the score remained nil-nil to force overtime.

The Ladies ratcheted up the pressure early in overtime, tabbing a pair of early corner kicks. In the 95th minute, Kenyon broke through, as Olivia Carriero scored the game-winning goal off an assist by Sadie Gould.

The loss is unfortunate, but certainly nothing to be ashamed of, as Kenyon is a strong program within the North Coast Athletic Conference. The Blue Streaks entered with a 4-1 mark, the first time since 2008 that the Blue Streaks have started so strong.

DelGiudice anchored JCU in net with 9 saves on 10 shots. Dufalla led the way on offense with 3 shots. Overall, Kenyon bested JCU in shots, 10-6.

After the loss, the Blue Streaks drop to 4-2 on the season.

Home beckons the Blue Streaks now, as Senior Day will take place on Saturday. John Carroll will host Ohio Wesleyan at 1 p.m. in a non-conference showdown.
