Goodwin's Career Day Pushes JCU Past Otterbein

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The No. 20 ranked John Carroll University Blue Streaks took care of business by defeating the Otterbein Cardinals 41-17 inside of Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon, as Demerius Goodwin found the endzone a career-high three times.

"My teammates knew their role and they were the key to my success today," Goodwin said. "I need to stay focused on my job and role and continue to execute to put us in a winning position."

After forcing a turnover on downs on the opening possession, the powerful Blue Streak offense took the field. Quarterback Jake Floriea connected with Keyshawn Coleman for a 31-yard strike putting JCU in Cardinal territory. Three plays later Goodwin would finish off the Blue and Gold drive with a 23-yard touchdown rush.

The John Carroll offense would be back on the field one minute later following a quick three-and-out by the Cardinals. JCU put together a 9-play, 50-yard drive, which lasted four minutes and 28 seconds as Goodwin scored his second touchdown, this time from 3 yards out.

Midway through the second quarter, Floriea completed back-to-back passes, putting JCU in the redzone. Senior tight end Gavin Martik went up high and caught a contested jump ball for his first touchdown this season, firing JCU ahead 21-3.

Jay Bradley of Otterbein scored the Cardinals' first touchdown of the afternoon on a 7-yard carry, making the score 21-10. On the ensuring JCU possession Goodwin received three straight carries before ripping off a season long 59-yard touchdown run.

The Blue and Gold would head into the locker room up 31-10, as Goodwin led the charge with 14 carries for 152 yards and 3 touchdowns.

John Carroll controlled the time of possession in the second half, including a 9-minute drive in the fourth quarter, which ended in a Grant Gonya 24-yard field goal.

Tyshawn Jones and Luke Brown led the Blue Streaks defense by recording eight tackles apiece. Goodwin ended the day with 194 rushing yards on 23 attempts, good for an average of 8.4 yards per carry.

"Today really came down to the why, a lot of guy's made great sacrifice by putting their career's on hold to come back for another year," Head Coach Rick Finotti said.

When asked about their matchup next week against Mount Union and the team's mindset coach Finotti said, "JCU, JCU, we need to focus on John Carroll football and do the little things. We need to make sure we prepare ourselves first before we worry about an opponent we respect, but we need to worry about John Carroll football first."

John Carroll will welcome No. 3 Mount Union to University Heights next Saturday with kickoff slated for 1:30 p.m. Setting up the third consecutive matchup with both the Blue Streaks and Purple Raiders ranked inside the top 25.
